COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) picked up two wins and
Amanda Snow (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in six runs with two home runs as the Lady Railsplitters (4-2) knocked off host Columbus State and Young Harris on Sunday in NCAA Division II softball action at the CSU Cougar Classic.
Â
Lincoln Memorial used a five-run fifth inning to race away from Columbus State in game one, capturing a 7-0 victory. Then, the Lady Railsplitters opened up game two with a five-run first frame to pace a 6-3 triumph over the Young Harris Mountain Lions.
Â
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 7, Columbus State 0Â
After the first two and a half innings passed with only two hits total between the two teams, the Lady Railsplitters used a break of good fortune to check into the scoring column in the bottom of the third.
Â
Megan Tice (Orlando, Fla.) led off the frame with a single into right field, and
Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) drew a walk in the next at-bat. Following a fielder's choice,
Kelly Dreier (Knoxville, Tenn.) bunted both runners into scoring position. With two outs, a ground ball off the bat of
Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) was misplayed by the Cougar second baseman, allowing both runners to score on the play.
Â
Columbus State put a runner in scoring position in both the fourth and fifth frames. Alora Thomps singled in the fourth and advanced to third on a ground out, but a fly out left her stranded 60 feet from home. Kristen Carr led off the fifth with single back up the middle, moved to second on a bunt and advanced to third on a ground out. But Smith struck out Calli Star to end the threat.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters broke the game open in the home half of the fifth. Moose kick started the inning with a one-out walk and a stolen base.
Emilee Solomon (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove her home in the next at-bat by slashing a single into right field. After a pop out, the Lady Railsplitters manufactured four more runs with two outs. Johnson elicited a walk and
Jaclyn Cokeroft (Longwood, Fla.) singled back up the middle, loading the bases for right-handed slugger Snow. The Knoxville, Tenn. native promptly hammered her first home run of the season over the left field wall to stake LMU to a 7-0 edge.
Â
The Cougars loaded the bases in the top of the seventh following singles by Carr, Kailey Boone and Taylor Woods, but Smith induced a ground out from Rachel Rhode to end the game.
Â
Smith pitched a complete-game shutout, beating Columbus State for the second time in two seasons. The Knoxville, Tenn. product allowed seven hits without a walk and two strikeouts.
Â
Snow carried the offense with that grand slam in the bottom of the fifth, notching just the fifth four-RBI performance of her career. Moose reached base safely in two of her three plate appearances, while Solomon scored two runs and drove in another in three at-bats.
Â
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 6, Young Harris 3Â
The Lady Railsplitters nearly batted around in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs on four hits. Solomon singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a base hit by Johnson. After a ground out, Snow smashed her second home run of the afternoon to extend the Lady Railsplitters' lead to 3-0. A throwing error then kept the inning alive for freshman
Teddi Collins (Germantown, Ohio), who hit the first home run of her career to make it a 5-0 game after one frame.
Â
Young Harris used two LMU miscues to battle back in the top of the third. Jeanie Perrucci jump-started the inning with a single, and an infield error put runners on first and second with no outs. Both runs came around to score on a base hit by Georgia Webb two batters later. Lincoln Memorial's second infield error of the inning allowed Webb to score and trimmed the deficit to 5-3.
Â
That would be as close as the Mountain Lions would get, though, as Smith set them down in order in the fourth, fifth and seventh frames. Young Harris did manufacture a hit to lead off the sixth inning, but Smith rolled a 4-6-3 double play to erase that runner.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Solomon singled and scored on a double by Cokeroft.
Â
Smith relieved
Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) with two outs in the top of the first and went the rest of the way, limiting Young Harris to only four hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work. Smith fanned five batters in that appearance.
Â
Solomon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Snow and Collins plated two runs apiece with two-run home runs.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters return to Dorothy Neely Field on Wednesday to host the Lee Flames for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch in game one is set for 1 p.m.
