TIGERVILLE, S.C. -- The Railsplitters (6-7) showed little sign of rust after an 11-day layoff, putting together a couple of complete performances to sweep a doubleheader from the North Greenville Crusaders (5-9) in NCAA Division II baseball action in Tigerville, S.C. on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
The Railsplitters scored early and four different pitchers combined for a shutout in a 2-0 win over the Crusaders in game one. In game two, Lincoln Memorial exploded for nine total runs in the sixth and seventh inning to race away with a 10-1 triumph.
Â
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 2, North Greenville 0Â
After being limited to indoor bullpen sessions with no live, in-game action for the past 10 days, head coach
Jeff Sziksai opted to use Wednesday's opening game to get some much-needed work for his staff. A quartet of pitchers delivered the goods by combining to limit the Crusaders to six hits and no runs.
Â
Grant Painter (Knoxville, Tenn.) worked through a leadoff single to keep the Crusaders scoreless in the top of the first before giving way to freshman
Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.). Randolph accounted for the longest stint of the contest, allowing three hits with four strikeouts in three scoreless innings.
Nick Morabito (Vienna, Va.) tossed the fifth and sixth innings, surrendering only one hit during that stretch.
Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.) finished it off with a scoreless seven, earning his second save of the season.
Â
Painter was credited with the win, improving to 1-2 in his first season with the Railsplitters.
Â
The Railsplitters manufactured a couple of early runs to supply some offensive support.
Â
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) reached on an outfield error to leadoff the game, advancing all the way to third on the play. He scored two batters later on a sacrifice ground out by
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa).
Â
A first-and-third play helped the Railsplitters add an insurance run in the top of the third. Tanner Lathan (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to open up the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Neiderland drew a walk just minutes later, and another wild pitch on the fourth ball of that at-bat sent Latham scampering to third. With two speedy runners on the corners, Neiderland stole second and Latham swiped home on the throw.
Â
The Railsplitters wouldn't get another runner into scoring position until the top of the sixth, when
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) walked and
Kelvin Brito (Yabucoa, Puerto Rico) singled with two outs. That inning ended in the next at-bat, though, with a ground out.
Â
The Crusaders had multiple opportunities to score throughout the contest. The home team put runners on second and third with one out in the second, but a 3-2 put out and a line out finished off that inning. Allen Staton doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball with no outs in the third. Two strikeouts and a foul out to the catcher left him stranded 90 feet from home. A double steal put Staton and Wheeler Smith at second and third with one out in the fifth. A line out and a ground out let that inning pass without consequence.
Â
Augustine accounted for the lone RBI for either team in the game.
Â
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 10, North Greenville 1Â
After posting just five hits in the afternoon's opener, the Railsplitters exploded for 12 hits in the finale.
Â
Lincoln Memorial picked up an early run as
Kyle Floyd (Windsor, Ill.) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly out by Burlison in the top of the second.
Â
The offense receded for the next three innings, but starting pitcher
Jake Watkins (Powder Springs, Ga.) took over during that stretch. The freshman right-hander spun six innings of five-hit, one-run ball, striking out two batters and picking up his first collegiate win.
Â
The Railsplitters provided all the run support Watkins needed in the top of the sixth, pushing six runs across the plate with seven hits. Neiderland and
Scott Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to lead off that inning, and Neiderland scored on a double by Floyd. Kalman legged out a triple in the next at-bat and extended LMU's cushion to 4-0. Following a pitching change, Morabito plated Kalman with a single and then came around to score on a double by Burlison. Neiderland concluded the scoring by coming back around to drive in Burlison with a base hit into right field.
Â
The Crusaders manufactured their only run of the game on a Tyler Mitchell single in the bottom of the sixth, but the Railsplitters responded with three runs in the seventh. All three of those runs were unearned thanks to three North Greenville errors.
Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) picked up an RBI in that frame with a two-out triple.
Â
Neiderland, Floyd, Morabito and Rodriguez each finished with two hits in the contest. Kalman drove in two runs with his first triple of the season. Floyd, Morabito and Burlison each scored two runs apiece.
Â
Freshman
Shane Whalen (Knoxville, Tenn.) threw the final inning for the Railsplitters, allowing one hit without a run.
Â
The Railsplitters extended their winning streak over the Crusaders to six games, improving to 15-1-1 in the all-time series.
Â
Next up, the Railsplitters travel to Hickory, N.C. for a three-game South Atlantic Conference set against the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears. First pitch in game one is set for 4 p.m. Friday. Â
