HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Pepe Batalla (Barcelona, Spain) won at both singles and doubles, but the Railsplitters were unable to manufacture any other points in a 7-2 loss to the 33rd-ranked Young Harris Lions in NCAA Division II men's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Complex. Lincoln Memorial falls to 1-2 in defeat, while Young Harris improves to 2-0.
Â
Batalla and
Joshua Peress (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) accounted for LMU's only point in doubles play, outlasting Raul Quevedo and Daniel Tiboldi 8-6 in the second doubles flight.
Joshua Coulthard (Staindrop, England) and
Will Sparks (Knoxville, Tenn.) suffered an 8-4 loss in the top flight to Sebastian and William Edin, while
Stefan Hall (Stratford, PEI) and
Carlos Zunino (Samborondon, Ecuador) fell just a bit short at No. 3 action in a 9-7 loss to Brecht Vangrinsven and Federico Terreni.
Â
Batalla was then responsible for the only point in singles play for the Railsplitters, defeating Tiboldi in the third singles flight.
Â
Coulthard played Sebastian Edin tough at No. 1 singles, but ultimately suffered a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 setback. Sparks was down two games to none in the opening set at No. 2 singles when a lower leg injury forced him to retire, awarding Vangrinsven the win. Peress, Hall and Zunino then fell in straight sets in the fourth, fifth and sixth flights. Peress nearly forced a third-set tiebreaker, but Terreni outlasted the Montreal native 6-2, 7-5.
Â
The Railsplitters will have a 10-day break to recover from some lingering injuries. Lincoln Memorial does not return to the court until the South Atlantic Conference opener on February 18, when the Railsplitters welcome the Mars Hill Lions to the LMU Tennis Complex for a 1 p.m. match. Â
