HARROGATE, Tenn. – The search continues for the program's first ever win as the Lady Railsplitters (0-4, 0-3 SAC) take to the road on Saturday for a South Atlantic Conference matchup against the Catawba Indians (3-2, 2-1 SAC). First draw control is slated for 11 a.m. in Salisbury, N.C.
Stifling defense and a strong offensive output for Wingate kept the Lady Railsplitters in check on Saturday in Gatlinburg, Tenn., as the Bulldogs launched 41 shot attempts while LMU mustered just four shots in an 18-1 loss. The Bulldogs accounted for a 30-14 advantage in ground balls and a 16-5 edge in draw controls over the course of the match.
Freshman midfielder
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) made it four-straight games with a goal as the Newburgh, Ind. native collected a pass from fellow freshman
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) from behind the goal into the eight yard box that allowed Beddington to beat Wingate goalie Paulena Dempsey low for her fourth goal of the season. James's assist was the first of her career in the Blue and Gray and it marked the first assisted goal in the first year of the Lincoln Memorial women's lacrosse program.
Sophomore
McKenzie Edds (Maynardville, Tenn.) made it back-to-back games with five pickups as the first-year player collected a team best-five ground balls against the Bulldogs, while James pulled in four loose balls.
Freshman backstop
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) made it four-consecutive matches with double-digit saves as the Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. native has been called into action early and often through the first four games of her career with the Lady Railsplitters. Novak has faced 170 shots already and recorded 53 saves, ranking second in the SAC in that department. .
The uphill climb will not get any easier for the Lady Railsplitters on Saturday as they visit a Catawba Indians squad that has played well to kick off the season, beating Shorter 14-13, Newberry 19-7 and Brevard 22-8. Catawba's only two losses have come against a pair of regional powerhouses in Queens (18-5) and Limestone (22-4).
The Indians have found nylon 64 times this season with a 12.80 goals per game average. Catawba has reached that figure on a relatively low number of shot attempts (115). Currently, the Indians lead the SAC with a .896 shot on goal percentage, while the defense has allowed 66 goals for a 13.16 goals against average. The bulk of that damage came against Queens and Limestone, who combined for 40 goals.
Offensively, Catawba is headed by freshman Caroline Beggs, who has racked up 16 goals and four assists on only 23 shots this season, while junior Alyssa Corace has scored 10 goals and added six assists.
Defensively, the Indians are led by Hannah Scott and Kourtney Jones who have both pulled in a team-best 19 ground balls. Jones currently leads the team with 15 draw controls.
