Solomon slugs first career home run as Softball splits SAC doubleheader at Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. -- The Lady Railsplitters (10-12, 2-2 SAC) went quietly in game one, but exploded for eight runs in game two behind senior Emilee Solomon's (Knoxville, Tenn.) first career home run to split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with the Coker Cobras (16-13, 4-2 SAC) in Hartsville, S.C. on Saturday.

Lincoln Memorial was limited to just four hits in a 3-0 loss in the first game before responding by piling up double-digit hits for the first time since February 21 in an 8-4 win in the finale.

Game One: Coker 3, Lincoln Memorial 0

The Cobras did every bit of their damage in the bottom of the second inning, putting the first three runners on base with back-to-back singles and an infield error, with the first run coming around to score on the miscue. With runners on second and third, Tyresha Ellis drove in both runners with a single into center field.

The Lady Railsplitters finished with only four hits, but four walks and a Cobra error gave the visiting unit a plethora of scoring opportunities.

One of their best chances came in the top of the first, as Solomon singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a passed ball on Meredith Johnson's (Kenly, N.C.) walk. Solomon was picked up at third by the Cobra catcher for the second out of the inning, but walks to Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.) and Amanda Snow (Knoxville, Tenn.) loaded the bases. All three runners were left stranded following a Megan Tice (Orlando, Fla.) fly out.

The Lady Railsplitters left runners stranded on third base in both the second and third innings, and they remained scoreless after leaving runners at first and second in the top of the sixth.

Lincoln Memorial was back in business in the top of the seventh, as Kristen McAndrew (Belmont, N.C.) reached safely and advanced to second on an error to lead off that inning, but three straight groundouts ended the contest.

The Lady Railsplitters finished with eight runners left on base over the course of the game, resulting in a tough-luck loss for starter Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.), who allowed six hits and two earned runs without a walk over six innings of work.

Brittany Long tossed the complete-game shutout for the Cobras, surrendering only four hits with four walks and four strikeouts over that span.

Snow reached base twice with a pair of walks, while Solomon, Tice, Teddi Collins (Germantown, Ohio) and Kelly Dreier (Knoxville, Tenn.) contributed the team's four hits.

Ellis and Riley Morris led the Cobras with two hits apiece.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 8, Coker 4

The Lady Railsplitters broke their drought and put the first run of the game on the board in the top of the first, as Dreier doubled and scored on a two-bagger from Snow.

Ashley Gallman accounted for the Cobras' only hit through the first two innings with a leadoff single in the home half of the first, but Coker would not square the contest until Gallman was hit by a pitch with two outs in the bottom of the third and scored on a double by Bailey.

The Cobras took the lead an inning later as Morris singled and Tayler Barcomb doubled to put runners on second and third without an out. A one-out single from Ellis gave Coker the lead, but two strikeouts helped LMU starter Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) wiggle out of a bases-loaded jam and keep the Lady Railsplitters within one run.

The Lady Railsplitters came absolutely unglued in the top of the fifth inning, kicking off a flurry that would see the Blue and Gray compile seven runs on seven hits over the next two frames and put the game out of reach.

Dreier poked a one-out single in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch two batters later to tie the game, while Johnson gave the Lady Railsplitters the lead with an RBI single into left field that same inning.

Three of LMU's first four batters reached in the sixth, as Tice doubled, Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) singled and Dreier reached on an error. That loaded the bases for Solomon, who pulverized a grand slam - the first home run of her collegiate career - over the left-field wall to extend the lead to 7-2. The Lady Railsplitters didn't stop after Solomon's dinger, as Snow singled and scored on a triple by Collins.

Coker went down in one-two-three fashion in the sixth, but made it interesting in the seventh, using a single by Carley Bailey and doubles from Ashlee Ellen and Morris to trim the lead to 8-4 with one out. Smith was called in from the bullpen and she allowed the tying run to come to the plate following a single from Barcomb. But the Knoxville, Tenn. native induced back-to-back groundouts to end the game.

Taylor bent but never broke in picking up her sixth win of the season, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings pitched. The Ooltewah, Tenn. native struck out seven without a walk issued over that span.

Tabitha Allen was saddled with the loss for the Cobras after relinquishing 13 hits and six earned runs in the complete game.

Tice went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored, while Snow and Dreier posted two hits apiece. Solomon drove in four runs and scored twice.

The Lady Railsplitters finished with 13 hits in the contest, their highest single-game output since producing 14 in a 9-4 win over Flagler on February 21.

Lincoln Memorial returns to Dorothy Neely Field for the first time since February 11 on Wednesday, hosting the Anderson Trojans for a South Atlantic Conference twinbill beginning at 1 p.m.
