Lady Railsplitters fall on losing end of walk-off wins for Wolves

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Newberry Wolves (23-14, 7-3 SAC) used a couple of walk-off hits - capping a 9-1 win in six innings with an RBI single in game one and notching a 4-3 victory with a run-scoring knock in the bottom of the seventh in game two - to sweep a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from the Lady Railsplitters (11-15, 3-5 SAC) on Saturday at the Smith Road Complex in Newberry, S.C.

Game One: Newberry 9, Lincoln Memorial 1 (6 innings)

Newberry's starting pitcher Maude McCourry handcuffed the Lady Railsplitters from start to finish, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts in the complete-game performance. McCourry walked three batters and allowed one unearned run.

Allison Van Atta led off the bottom of the second with a single for the Wolves, while a two-out error allowed the inning to continue for the home team. Casey Nellums took advantage of that opportunity and put Newberry on the board with a single back up the middle.

The Lady Railsplitters went down in 1-2-3 order in the visitor's half of the third, while Newberry brought three runs across. Gabby Bedard walked and Mallory Gerndt doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs, and Jeri Loffler singled through the left side of the infield to make it a 2-0 game. Van Atta drove in another run with an RBI groundout and Tori Zambrano, who pitch ran for Loffler, scored on a passed ball.

The Wolves increased their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the fifth on another miscue by the Lady Railsplitter defense, as Casey Nakawatase pitch ran for McCourry, who earned a one-out walk, and stole home on some first-and-third hijinks.

The Lady Railsplitters accounted for two of their three hits and scored their only run of the game in the top of the sixth. Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) singled - the first hit for LMU since an Emilee Solomon (Knoxville, Tenn.) single in the top of the first - and Kelly Dreier (Knoxville, Tenn.) collected a base hit to put a pair of runners on with no outs. An RBI groundout from Solomon brought a run across, and Amanda Snow (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) walked to load the bases. But a strikeout and a groundout limited the Lady Railsplitters to just that one run.

Any momentum the Lady Railsplitters had gained in that frame was quickly washed away as the Wolves then exploded for five hits and four runs in the home half of the inning. A two-out, run-scoring single from Nellums capped that flurry and gave the Wolves the walk-off victory. Loffler, Van Atta and Hailey Drawe each accounted for an RBI in that frame.

Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) allowed nine hits and four earned runs in 2 2/3 innings, falling to 4-7 on the season with the loss. Snow tossed three innings in relief, surrendering three hits and three runs over that span.

Gerndt, Loffler and McCourry paced the Wolves, who finished with 12 hits in the contest, with two hits apiece.

Game Two: Newberry 4, Lincoln Memorial 3

The Lady Railsplitters jumped on the Wolves right from the start, getting singles from Dreier and Solomon to put two runners on with no outs. A double steal put both Dreier and Solomon into scoring position, and Johnson plated Dreier with a sacrifice fly out to center field. Ashlea Hunter drove in the second run of the inning, coming through with a two-out, RBI single to score Solomon and stake the Lady Railsplitters to a 2-0 lead.

Newberry bounced back, though, scoring a single run in the first, second and fourth frames to take over the lead. Ashlen Ayres walked and scored on a sacrifice fly out in the first stanza, Bedard tied the game with a run-scoring single in the second, and Gerndt gave the Wolves the lead with a two-out, RBI single in the fourth.

The resilient Lady Railsplitters fought back to tie the game again in the top of the sixth, as Megan Tice (Orlando, Fla.) singled and scored on a base knock from Moose. Lincoln Memorial had an opportunity to take the lead in that inning as Moose moved into scoring position by swiping second, but Dreier bounced out to end the frame.

Newberry went scoreless in the sixth and the Lady Railsplitters left another runner stranded at second base in the top of the seventh.

The Wolves put their first runner on in the bottom of the seventh, with Loffler reaching on a hit-by-pitch. Following a groundout, Ann Dee Priest and Drawe singled to load the bases with only one out. McCourry then notched the Wolves' third straight single and provided Newberry with its second walk-off hit of the afternoon.

Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) went 6 1/3 innings for the Lady Railsplitters, suffering the loss after allowing 12 hits and three earned runs. She struck out four and walked two over that span.

Seven different players contributed a single hit for the Lady Railsplitters.

Brittany Middleton picked up the win for the Wolves, tossing seven innings with seven hits and two earned runs allowed. Dee Priest paced Newberry's 12-hit outing with three hits.

It marks the first time Newberry has swept the Lady Railsplitters in a doubleheader since the 2009 campaign, ending Lincoln Memorial's seven-game winning streak over the Wolves.

The Lady Railsplitters stop in Greenwood, S.C. on Sunday for a nonconference twinbill against the Lander Bearcats, set for a 1 p.m. start.
