NEWBERRY, S.C. – Following the program's inaugural win on Wednesday, the Lady Railsplitters (1-8, 0-7 SAC) fell 17-4 to the Newberry Wolves (4-7, 2-3) in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action on Saturday at Setzler Field in Newberry, S.C.
Despite outscoring Newberry 3-2 in the second half, the Lady Railsplitters were unable to overcome the Wolves' 6-0 opening run and a 15-1 first-half deficit.
Freshman midfielder
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) accounted for all four of the Lady Railsplitters' goals, and she tallied three of her four markers in the final 15 minutes of the match, scoring at the 15:03 and 13:45 marks of the second stanza. She notched her fourth and final goal with just a second remaining in regulation. All four of her goals came in unassisted fashion and two were scored off of free-position opportunities.
With the sixth multiple goal effort of her freshman campaign, James increased her team-high, season goal total to 21. The Vero Beach, Fla. native has now scored in seven of the team's nine matches.
Newberry accounted for a 30-13 shot advantage and a 26-16 ground ball edge. The Lady Railsplitters turned the ball over 17 times in the match, while forcing the Wolves to commit nine miscues.
The Lady Railsplitters finished 7-for-11 on clear attempts, while the Wolves were nearly perfect in that category, going 10-of-11.
James led Lincoln Memorial with eight of the team's 13 shot attempts, accumulating a team-high five draw controls in addition to her four goals. Seniors
Haley Hilliard (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and
Carly Cepelak (Tampa, Fla.) paced LMU with three ground ball pickups apiece, while senior
Stacey Dotson (Huntsville, Ala.) accounted for two of the Lady Railsplitters' five remaining shot attempts.
Freshman goalie
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) registered eight saves on 30 shots, pushing her South Atlantic Conference leading save mark to 110.
The Lady Railsplitters return to the LMU Lacrosse Complex on Wednesday, opening the month of April with a nonconference showdown against the UVA-Wise Cavaliers, with first draw control set for 2 p.m.
