Railsplitters drop series finale at Brevard 7-5

BREVARD, N.C. -- The Brevard Tornados (16-18, 10-13 SAC) scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cap a back-and-forth contest and defeat the Railsplitters (18-14, 10-8 SAC) 7-5 in the third game of a three-game South Atlantic Conference baseball series on Sunday in Brevard, N.C.

The Tornados drew first blood in the bottom of the second frame as Christian Dix led off with a double and scored three batters later on a single from William O'Hara.

The Railsplitters responded in the top of the fourth and jumped into the lead by scraping for a pair of runs. Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) kicked off that inning with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly out from Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Nick Morabito (Vienna, Va.) then jump started another rally with a double down the right-field line, which later resulted on a run via a fielder's choice by Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.).

Brevard bounced back quickly and regained the lead in the home half of the fourth, as Blaine Durham was hit by a pitch and Kody Spencer singled in front of Pat Quinn, who drove in both runners with a single through the left side of the infield.

The Tornados tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 5-2. Ryan Smith drove an RBI single back up the middle to account for the first run of that frame, while Quinn, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on a sacrifice fly from Joseph Mesi.

Lincoln Memorial battled back and used some good fortune to tie the game over the next two innings. Singles from Scott Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Jonathan Lowe (Sidney, Ohio), along with a walk to Augustine, loaded the bases for the Railsplitters with one out in the seventh. Kalman plated the only run of that frame, though, with a sacrifice fly out. Another fly out following Kalman's run-scoring one ended the inning and left the bases loaded.

The Railsplitters kept it rolling in the eighth, using a fielding error and a Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) single to put two runners on. Neiderland stole second base later in the inning and another Brevard error on the play allowed Valdez to score. Yet another fielding error on a ball put in play by Miller allowed the Railsplitters to plate the tying run.

Brevard was on the winning end of the final momentum shift, though, as John Slade opened up the bottom of the eighth with a double. An intentional walk put another runner on base, while Josh Hall singled through the left side of the infield to break the stalemate. A failed pickoff attempt and an error allowed another runner to score for the Tornados.

The Railsplitters put two runners on base in the top of the ninth as Augustine walked and Morabito singled, but a strikeout and a fielder's choice ended the contest in Brevard's favor.

Wes Todd (Thompson Station, Tenn.) took the loss on the mound, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. He struck out three and walked four over that span.

The Railsplitters finished with 12 hits and 13 runners left on base. Miller paced Lincoln Memorial by going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Lowe, Morabito and Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.) added a pair of hits apiece, while Kalman drove in two runs.

Tyler Konzen earned the win for the Tornados after allowing two unearned runs and two hits in two innings out of the bullpen. J.D. Chaplain threw the first seven innings with 10 hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

With the loss, the Railsplitters dropped their series against the Tornados for the first time since 2012 and only the second time since joining the South Atlantic Conference in time for the 2007 campaign.

Lincoln Memorial heads over the Greeneville, Tenn. on Monday for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader against the Tusculum Pioneers, with first pitch in game one set for 4 p.m.
