Railsplitters earn second straight SAC sweep with 16-5 thrashing of Eagles

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Nick Morabito (Vienna, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and Ryan Burlison (Romeoville, Ill.) racked up a career-high five RBI on three hits as the Railsplitters (12-7, 9-3 SAC) capped their second straight South Atlantic Conference series sweep with a 16-5 shellacking of the Carson-Newman Eagles (9-10, 6-9 SAC) in Jefferson City, Tenn. on Sunday.

With the win, Lincoln Memorial extended its overall winning streak to nine games and its SAC winning streak to seven. It's the lengthiest such stretch for the program since the 2009 team captured 10 consecutive wins from March 16-29.

The Railsplitters fell behind early as Eric Lynch doubled and Bo Ausmus belted a two-run home run to stake the Eagles to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Lincoln Memorial went quietly in the first and second innings, but broke out to take the lead in the bottom of the third. Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) kick started the Railsplitters with a single through the right side, and Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) followed that up with a walk. Scott Miller (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove home the first run with a single, while a throwing error in the next at-bat allowed Neiderland to score. A first-and-third play brought Miller in and gave the Railsplitters a 3-2 edge.

Carson-Newman squared it up a 3-3 in the next half inning, as Cade Snapp reached on a fielding error and scored on a Brandon Roberts single.

Morabito would account for the next three runs of the ball game, though, and give the Railsplitters a lead in which they would not relinquish. The Vienna, Va. native and senior infielder hammered a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to put Lincoln Memorial in front 4-3, and he struck again in the bottom of the sixth, belting a two-run home run over the wall in left field.

Sunday's contest was the first start in SAC play for Morabito, who entered the third game of the series with just two hits in his first 12 at-bats.

The Railsplitters tacked on two more runs following Morabito's second bomb in the bottom of the sixth, as Burlison doubled and scored on a triple by Neiderland, who later came around to score on a wild pitch.

Carson-Newman trimmed LMU's deficit briefly with a two-run, two-out double by Joe Rotelli in the top of the seventh, but the Railsplitters responded with three more runs in the home half of that inning. Burlison singled in Kalman, who led off the inning with a walk, while Neiderland drove in a pair of runs with a base hit back up the middle.

The Railsplitters continued to pour it on in their final plate appearance. Kyle Floyd (Windsor, Ill.) singled and Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y) and Morabito walked in front of Burlison, who belted a grand slam down the left-field line to extend the cushion to 15-5. Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) concluded the scoring by driving in Rodriguez with a single.

Carson-Newman starter Vince Apicella entered Sunday's contest having allowed only four earned runs in his previous 34 innings pitched. The Railsplitters hung five earned runs on Apicella and chased him from the game after only five innings of work. The Eagles used eight pitchers to maneuver through the Railsplitters' potent lineup.

Wes Todd (Thompson Station, Tenn.) improved to 3-1 for the Railsplitters after striking out seven batters and limiting the Eagles to four earned runs with six hits in 6 1/3 innings work.

Lincoln Memorial piled up 16 hits, headlined by a combined six hits and eight RBI by Morabito and Burlison. Floyd added a pair of hits and a walk, while Neiderland went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Rodriguez was 2-for-4 out of the nine hole. The last three batters in LMU's order went 8-for-13 with nine runs scored and eight RBI.

After their second straight SAC sweep and seventh straight league victory, the Railsplitters are tied atop the league standings with a 9-3 mark.

The Railsplitters return to Lamar Hennon Field on Tuesday to host the UVA-Wise Cavaliers to a nonconference tilt. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Harrogate.
