Bats quiet again as Lady Railsplitters drop two in Captain D's Classic

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Lincoln Memorial's (8-10) struggles at the plate continued with a pair of shutout loss to the 11th-ranked North Georgia Nighthawks and the McKendree Bearcats on Sunday at the Captain D's Surf & Turf Classic in Dahlonega, Ga.

North Georgia starter Courtney Poole dominated the Lady Railsplitters for the second day in a row in the Nighthawks' 6-0 win in game one, while McKendree used a pair of three-run innings to hand the Lady Railsplitters an 8-0 loss in six innings in the day's second game.

Game One: No. 11 North Georgia 6, Lincoln Memorial 0

A day after striking out 14 and allowing only three hits in a 6-0 win, North Georgia's Poole was equally as unhittable on Sunday. She surrendered just a single hit with seven strikeouts in the complete-game shutout.

The Lady Railsplitters were unable to get a runner on base until the bottom of the sixth, when Megan Tice (Orlando, Fla.) reached on an error to lead off the inning. Emilee Solomon (Knoxville, Tenn.) broke up Poole's no-hit bid two batters later with a single up the middle, putting runners on first and third with two outs, but Kelly Dreier (Knoxville, Tenn.) flew out to end the inning.

North Georgia provided plenty of run support for Poole, scoring in all but two innings.

Kim McMillan popped a solo home run with one out in the top of the first, while Laura Spivey added to the Nighthawks' lead with an RBI single in the top of the second.

UNG went scoreless in the third, but a Katie Block sacrifice fly out put a tally on the visitor's side in the fourth frame. McMillan and Jessica Finch reached to open up the top of the fifth, and both runners came around to score on a two-out double from Meagan May.

The Nighthawks added an unnecessary insurance run in the seventh, as Tiffanie Burns singled and scored on an Ansley Phillips base hit.

Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) was solid in 2 1/3 innings of relief, allowing only one earned run with three hits over that span. Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) surrendered six hits and five earned runs over 4 2/3 innings in the start.

May and Spivey paced the Nighthawks with two hits apiece.

Game Two: McKendree 8, Lincoln Memorial 0 (6 innings)

A pair of big innings helped the Bearcats end Sunday's final game early.

The first three batters reached safely for McKendree in the bottom of the first, and a walk to Erica Johnson propped the Bearcats out to an early 1-0 lead.

The Lady Railsplitters let an opportunity slip away in the top of the second as Amanda Snow (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled and Tice walked to put two runners on with one out. Smith popped up in the infield and Teddi Collins (Germantown, Ohio) struck out looking, though, to end the inning.

A single and a throwing error put the Bearcats back in business in the bottom of the second, as Jamie Doggendorf drove in one run with a single to center field. Two batters later, Ashley Scheffler pushed the McKendree lead to 4-0 and capped a three-run inning with a two-RBI single.

Another opportunity slipped away from Lincoln Memorial in the top of the fourth. Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.) and Snow singled to put two runners on with one out, but a strikeout and a line out kept the Lady Railsplitters scoreless.

Doggendorf collected her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fourth by following up a Rebecca Franke triple with a single.

The Lady Railsplitters registered two hits in both the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to cash in on either of those chances.

A Kate Mayes single and a fielder's choice by Scheffler put two runners on for the Bearcats in the bottom of the sixth, and two runs scored on a ball put in play by Johnson. Two batters later, Branch ended the game with an RBI single through the right side of the infield.

The Lady Railsplitters logged seven hits in the contest and stranded eight runners on the base paths.

Snow led Lincoln Memorial with two hits.

Smith fell to 4-5 on the season after allowing six earned runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings pitched. The Knoxville, Tenn. native walked five batters over that span.

The Lady Railsplitters open South Atlantic Conference play on Saturday, March 14, welcoming the Queens Royals to Dorothy Neely Field for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
