HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Junior right-hander
Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) threw a gem in game one and the Lady Railsplitters (20-18, 9-7 SAC) exploded in game two to sweep a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from the Brevard Tornados (9-21, 2-14 SAC) on Sunday at Dorothy Neely Field.

Lincoln Memorial won game one by a final score of 2-0 before completing its fourth consecutive sweep with a 16-0 five-inning thrashing in game two, extending the SAC's longest current winning streak to eight. The Lady Railsplitters, who were 3-7 in league play and staring at the possibility of missing out on the SAC tournament on April 1, moved into fourth place in the current standings in the wake of Sunday's sweep.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 2, Brevard 0
After chucking a three-hitter in Saturday's win at Catawba, Smith was even better in Sunday's opener, allowing just two hits without a run in a complete-game shutout. The Knoxville, Tenn. native finished with four strikeouts while only throwing 80 pitches, improving to 8-8 in the process.

Smith struggled to adjust to a tight strike zone early in the contest, walking a batter in both the first and second innings, but she settled down and allowed just two baserunners from the third inning on.

Brevard starter Jamie Hrobak was nearly as good, but the Lady Railsplitters scrounged for the only runs they would need in the bottom of the second.
Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) led off that inning with a single back up the middle, while
Megan Tice (Orlando, Fla.) worked a walk.
Savannah Couch (Colonial Heights, Va.) plated the first run with a single through the right side of the infield. Tice scored in the next at-bat thanks to a costly throwing error by the Tornado right fielder.

The Lady Railsplitters loaded the bases in the bottom of the third and put two runners in the fourth, but came up empty in both of those opportunities. Brevard, meanwhile, mustered one of its only scoring chances, if it could be called that, in the visitor's half of the third inning when Kinny Davis led off with a single. Smith snuffed out any possibility of scoring by striking out both Casey Whitaker and Brittan Miller and forcing Dallas Heaton into a groundout.

Following Davis's single, Smith retired the last 12 batters she faced.

Lincoln Memorial found a way to win in spite of Hrobak's stellar performance, as she limited the home squad to just five hits while striking out four in six innings. Hrobak's control was shaky, though, as she walked five and hit another.

With the win, Lincoln Memorial head coach
Natalie Layden picked up the 75th win of her career. Layden was hired as the head coach of the Lady Railsplitters prior to the start of the 2013 campaign.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 16, Brevard 0 (5 innings)
Runs came in bunches as the Lady Railsplitters racked up the most runs in a single game since accounting for 17 in a win over Salem International way back on February 19, 2011. Lincoln Memorial piled up 14 hits, recording double-digit hits for the fifth time this season and matching the 14-hit effort against Flagler on February 21.

Snow went 3-for-4 with four RBI, three runs scored, a home run and a walk, while Tice was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.
Kristen McAndrew (Belmont, N.C.) was 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs, while
Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.) contributed three RBI in her only official at-bat.
Kelly Dreier (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Johnson added two hits apiece.

The Lady Railsplitters put up three runs in the bottom of the first, as Solomon walked and scored on a double by Snow, while Tice plated two runs by dropping a double down the left-field line.

Brevard stranded two runners on base in the top half of the second, while the Lady Railsplitters broke the game wide open in the home half of that frame, scoring eight runs on seven hits and nearly batting around twice in the inning.

Dreier kicked off the scoring with an RBI single, and Snow followed that up with a three-run dinger to left-center field, her sixth of the season and first since March 24. The hits kept coming as Moose drove in one with a double and McAndrew plated three with another two-bagger. McAndrew capped the scoring by scampering home on a passed ball with Hunter at the plate.

The Lady Railsplitters tacked on five more runs in the third stanza, highlighted by Hunter's three-run double.

Smith and
Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) combined to shut down the Brevard offense. Smith threw the first two innings, giving up three hits without a run over that span. Taylor took over in the third frame and surrendered a lone hit without a run to earn the win, improving to 11-9 for the season.

Barring inclement weather, the Lady Railsplitters host the Mars Hill Lions at Dorothy Neely Field for a South Atlantic Conference twinbill on Tuesday, with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
