WOMEN'S SOCCER CENTRAL: Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. -- Looking to snap a two-match scoreless streak, the Lady Railsplitters (1-1-1) open up South Atlantic Conference play against the Brevard Tornados (1-1-1) at 2 p.m. on Wednesday in Brevard, N.C.

A week after failing to score a goal in a 0-0 double overtime draw at Montevallo, Lincoln Memorial turned in by far its worst offensive performance of the season in a 3-0 loss at Lee. The Lady Railsplitters registered a season-low six shot attempts, the program's fewest since September 20 of last season, and went without producing a single corner kick, breaking a 17-match streak with at least one corner.

The Lady Railsplitters will look to avoid being shutout in three consecutive matches for the first time since the 2012 season, when they were stymied in three straight contests by Anderson, Trevecca Nazarene and Wingate.

Since the 2010 season, the Lady Railsplitters are 3-2 in South Atlantic Conference openers. Lincoln Memorial dropped a 1-0 decision to Coker in last season's SAC lid lifter despite finishing with an 18-8 shot disparity and an 8-2 shots on goal edge. In the most recent SAC road opener in 2013, the Lady Railsplitters pounded the Cobras 5-0 in Hartsville.

Nobody thought it would be easy before the season began, but replacing the production of All-SAC forwards Nicole McKinney and Fernanda Miaci has been a tremendous struggle early on for the Lady Railsplitters, who are ranked ninth in the SAC in shots (37), eighth in shot percentage (.108), eighth in goals (4) and 11th in assists (1).

The return of senior forward Olivia Thompson (Melbourne, Fla.), who missed the match against Lee with a minor injury, should help buoy the offense, though, as she has accounted for four shots, a goal and four shots on goal in two appearances. Michelle Hunter (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada) and Claire Leasure (Franklin, Tenn.) are pacing the Lady Railsplitters with seven shots apiece.

Wednesday's match is the third straight true road test for the Lady Railsplitters. Lincoln Memorial finally makes its home debut on Saturday against Queens before completing its road-heavy start with trips to Tusculum and Lenoir-Rhyne next week.

Brevard - Live Stats

The Tornados have seen steady improvement over the past two seasons, finishing 3-8 in South Atlantic Conference last season after going winless (0-10-1) in 2013. Through three matches in the 2015 campaign, Brevard is 1-1-1, following up a 1-1 draw against King, a team expected to finish in the upper half of the Conference Carolinas, with a 3-0 pummeling of Chowan this past weekend.

In that 3-0 win, the Tornados fired off 27 shots and 13 shots on goal without allowing the Hawks to issue even a single shot attempt.

Brevard's roster is an even mix of experience and youth as the Tornados have nine underclassmen and nine upperclassmen that have appeared in at least one match this season. That distribution could partially explain why the Tornados have created a respectable 48 shots in three matches while only accounting for four goals and a 43.8 shots on goal percentage, both the second-lowest totals in the South Atlantic Conference.

Senior Shannon Bava and freshman Caroline David are leading the Tornados offensively with a goal and an assist apiece. David has accumulated a team-high 10 shots and four shots on goal while Bava has seven shots and three shots on goal. Sarah Fonger and Anita Maryskova have a goal apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn Springer has played 237 of the Tornados' 252 minutes in net, posting a 0.76 goals against average, seven saves and a .778 save percentage. She has allowed only two goals in three appearances.

The Lady Railsplitters have won all eight meetings against Brevard, shutting the Tornados out in five of those matches with an all-time 31-5 scoring edge. Lincoln Memorial has not allowed Brevard to score since 2011, defeating them by a combined 9-0 total over the past three seasons. Hunter tallied two goals in the Lady Railsplitters' 3-0 win in Brevard in 2013. She also scored in last season's 2-0 triumph in Harrogate.
