HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Powered by an unrelenting block up front, the Lady Railsplitters (4-5, 2-4 SAC) halted a four-match losing skid with a 3-1 win over the Coker Cobras (2-6, 0-6 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night at Mary Mars Gym. Lincoln Memorial won by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 25-14 and 25-17.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters held the Cobras to a miniscule .059 attack percentage, and Lincoln Memorial forced the majority of Coker's 27 attack errors, recording a ridiculous 24 blocks assists. That is the seventh-most block assists in the program's single-match history and the most since the Lady Railsplitters tallied 26 against Newberry in 2009.
Â
Redshirt freshman
Tone Gill (Nashville, Tenn.) led the charge in that department, posting seven block assists (tied for the ninth-most in program history) as well as a solo block. Gill also amassed a career-high 10 kills on a .286 attack percentage.
Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) had 15 kills with a .294 attack percentage, 11 digs and three block assists, while
Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) contributed 11 kills and six digs.
Brooke Fleeman (Nashville, Tenn.) produced nine kills and five blocks assists, while
Allison McKinnon (Missouri City, Texas) had a big night off of the bench, collecting eight kills on just 12 attempts (.583) with four block assists.
Â
Junior setter
Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) surpassed the 50-assist threshold for the third time in her career by racking up a season-best 54 assists. Cash's assist total is the sixth-most in a four-set match in program history as she fell just three short of matching her career high. She also added 12 digs to notch her seventh double-double of the season.
Â
Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led all players with 17 digs.
Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.) chipped in with 13 scoops.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters and Cobras went back and forth in the first frame, which was tied 12 different times through the first 32 rallies. A kill by Madison Bingle made the score 16-16 late in the set, but kills from Gill, Holland and Fleeman kicked off a 9-2 closing run for the Lady Railsplitters. Lincoln Memorial outhit the Cobras 16-8 in that opening frame with a .209 to .053 advantage on attack percentage.
Â
The Cobras jumped out to a 13-10 lead in the second set following a kill from Christen Bragg, but the Lady Railsplitters won seven of the next nine rallies to take the lead at 15-14 on a kill by Holland. Neither team led by more than two points for the remainder of the set, as the ensuing passage of play featured seven ties. A couple of late service errors ended up costing the Lady Railsplitters. After taking a 23-22 lead on Holland's kill, Lincoln Memorial served it out of bounds to even it up at 23-23. The match was then tied at 24-24 when the Lady Railsplitters sailed another serve long. An LMU attack error clinched the set for Coker 26-24.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters never trailed in the third set, building an early 6-2 lead by forcing four straight attack errors. Later, with the set tied at 9-9 following a Cayley Gunter kill, the Lady Railsplitters ripped off an 11-2 run, capped by back-to-back Megan Hardy attack miscues, to take a 20-11 lead. The Cobras scrapped for a few points late, but a kill by McKinnon ended the Lady Railsplitters' 25-14 triumph.
Â
A kill by Brock pushed the Lady Railsplitters out to a 13-9 lead in set four, but Coker scored four unanswered points to knot the set at 13-13. Lincoln Memorial responded with a 7-2 spurt, carried by three kills from Holland and two from McKinnon, to jolt in front 20-15. The Lady Railsplitters eventually ended the set and the match with a 5-0 run. Appropriately, Lincoln Memorial clinched the match by blocking Bingle's attack attempt.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters outhit the Cobras 61-36 with a season-high .208 attack percentage. It was the first time Lincoln Memorial hit above .200 since knocking off No. 25 Armstrong State on September 5.
Â
Shealynn Miller led the Cobras with nine kills and a .471 attack percentage. Cayley Gunter and Madison Bingle had six kills apiece. Christen Bragg had 14 assists and 16 digs, while Rachel Waters posted 15 digs. Â
Â
Next up, the Lady Railsplitters welcome the Wingate Bulldogs to Mary Mars for a 2 p.m. SAC battle on Saturday afternoon. Lincoln Memorial will be looking for its first-ever win over the Bulldogs, who have won nine straight SAC titles and are 17-0 in the all-time series.
