SALISBURY, N.C. -- A dominant performance on the boards helped the Lady Railsplitters (9-6, 6-4 SAC) overcome a poor shooting performance and escape Catawba's Goodman Gymnasium with a 64-60 win over the Indians (7-9, 4-6 SAC) Saturday afternoon.
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) led all scorers with a career-high 23 points in one of her best all-around outings, as she went 7-for-13 from the field and a career-best 4-of-7 from behind the arc. She was also 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) added in 15 points off of a 3-for-3 performance from the field and an 8-of-9 performance from the free throw line.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) led all players on the boards with 16 rebounds.
LMU outrebounded Catawba 48-32 and had 17 turnovers to the Indians' 9. The Lady Railsplitters shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) from the field, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three-point range and 69.2 percent from the free throw line.
It looked like it would be all LMU early on as the Lady Railsplitters went on a 14-3 run midway through the first quarter that was sparked by eight quick points by Guy. A free throw and basket by Catawba would eventually cut the Lady Railsplitters' lead to 15-8 at the end of the first period.
The Lady Railsplitters saw Catawba make some runs in the second frame, even cutting the LMU lead to 15-13 at one point, but they would hold on to take a 28-23 lead into halftime.
The third quarter saw Catawba come out shooting 50 percent (7-of-14) for the period as they methodically chipped away at the LMU lead, eventually grabbing the lead on a Bri Johnson three-pointer with 3:39 left. The two teams then traded baskets, with a Pittman jumper putting LMU up 38-37 with 2:38 left in the frame. Catawba then went on a 5-0 run to close the third frame with the 42-38 lead.
The Lady Railsplitters cut the lead to one on two different occasions in the fourth quarter, the second time on a Coker jump shot with 2:35 left. Catawba then ran the lead back out to 58-54 before a free throw from LaKeshia Beasley (College Park, Ga.) and two free throws from Coker cut it back to one at 58-57 with 1:10 left.
Catawba then tried to run some time off the clock but Zhaquondalee Greer was called for the charge when she tried to drive it in for a layup. Guy then dribbled down the court, found herself wide open and buried a long-range three-pointer to give LMU the 60-58 lead with 29 seconds left. Simultaneously, Pittman was fouled while going for the rebound and hit one of her two free throws to put LMU up 61-58. The Indians then called timeout to advance the ball. On the ensuing play Catawba's Serena Brown found Terri Rogers wide open for the backdoor layup, cutting the lead to 61-60 with 23 seconds left.
Greer then fouled Guy to stop the clock with 17 seconds left. Guy then hit one of two free throws to give LMU the 62-60 lead. After a Catawba timeout to advance the ball, Rogers missed the layup and grabbed her own rebound. She then passed the ball to Greer, who was called for travelling with 9 seconds left. LMU coach
Krystal Evans then called timeout to advance the ball. Greer quickly fouled Coker, who hit both free throws to seal the win for the Lady Railsplitters.
Johnson led Catawba with 17 points. Rogers and Jada Huntley each added in 14 for the Indians.
