Lady Railsplitters move to 10-1 in SAC play with four-set win at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. -- The Lady Railsplitters pushed their winning streak to five and remained perfect in the all-time series against Brevard with a four-set win  (27-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-17) over the feisty Tornados on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gymnasium in Brevard, N.C.

Lincoln Memorial (13-2, 10-1 SAC) amassed 63 kills - their third-most in a match this season - on a .253 attack percentage to complete the first half of South Atlantic Conference play with a 10-1 mark, which is the program's best-ever 11-game start in league play. In addition to that, the Lady Railsplitters moved to 22-0 all-time against Brevard (3-14, 3-8 SAC), who suffered its eighth straight loss.

Senior outside hitter Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) and sophomore right side Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) led the way for the Lady Railsplitters. Brock tied a match-high mark with 16 kills to go along with nine digs, while Cash fell just short of posting her second triple-double of the season, racking up 13 kills on a .300 clip with eight assists, nine digs and three block assists. Sophomore middle Danielle Ged (Smyrna, Tenn.) added nine kills on just 16 attempts, while Jamie Jehne (Hollywood, Fla.) and Lindsey Nartker (New Carlisle, Ohio) had six kills apiece.

Senior setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) collected a match-high 46 assists with 13 digs, while Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.) led all players with 18 scoops. Along with her six kills, Nartker produced 13 digs.

Brevard was solid on offense, posting 53 kills with a .217 clip, which was the most efficient performance by an LMU opponent since Wingate hit .346 on September 23. Callie Chappell led the Tornados with 16 kills, while Rachel Ruble had 10. Hannah Elmore and Stephanie Lambert chipped in nine kills apiece. Erin Barr had 45 assists and 11 digs, while Maggie Weiss led the way with 12 digs.

It was all Brevard early in the first set, as a kill from Barr put the Tornados ahead 12-7. Brevard retained a five-point cushion at 15-10 following an LMU attack error, but the Lady Railsplitters followed that up with an 8-0 run to take an 18-15 lead. Brock and Ged fueled that spurt with two kills apiece. The two teams battled back and forth from there, with Brevard eventually forcing set point at 24-23 on a kill by Savannah Cox. The Lady Railsplitters won the next two points, however, to have a chance at set point, but Chappell put away a kill to make it 25-25. LMU won the next two rallies, though, on a pair of Brevard miscues to take a hard-fought 27-25 win.

The Tornados led from start to finish in the second set, opening on a 6-0 run before Brock stopped the bleeding with a kill. Lincoln Memorial closed the gap to 6-4 after that, but Brevard steadily increased its lead, building a 17-9 advantage on two straight kills from Elmore. The deficit was never less than four after that, as a kill from Lambert drew the match even at a set apiece.

The Lady Railsplitters trailed 9-8 early in the third set following a kill by Lambert, but controlled the next passage of play, establishing an 18-14 cushion on a kill by Nartker. A 3-0 run pulled the Tornados within one before LMU answered with a 3-0 run of their own to build a 21-17 lead. The Lady Railsplitters later completed the 25-21 win on a kill by Ged.

Trying to send the match to five sets, Brevard built a 10-7 lead in the fourth frame. However, the Lady Railsplitters would get hot after falling in that early hole, ripping off a 16-4 run to take a commanding 23-14 lead on a kill by Jehne. There was nothing the Tornados could do from there, as kills by Jehne and Brock wrapped up the four-set win with a 25-17 victory.

The Lady Railsplitters held the Tornados to just nine kills on a paltry .083 attack percentage in the match-clinching fourth set.

Lincoln Memorial will take a brief break from SAC play next weekend when they travel to nearby Jefferson City, Tenn. to compete in the SAC/Peach Belt Conference Challenge. That four-match series begins against Augusta at noon on Friday, October 14.
