Lady Railsplitters roll past Pioneers in straight sets

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters extended their winning streak to five and remained atop the South Atlantic Conference standings with a 3-0 win over the Tusculum Pioneers on Tuesday night in Greeneville, Tenn. Lincoln Memorial (22-4, 16-2 SAC) pulled off its second straight 3-0 win and third in its last four matches by toppling Tusculum (11-15, 6-12 SAC) 25-22, 25-21 and 25-19.

It was another efficient day at the office for the Lady Railsplitters offensively, as they produced 44 kills on a .284 attack percentage while limiting Tusculum to 40 kills on a .179 clip. With the win, Lincoln Memorial improved to 6-2 against the Pioneers over the last eight meetings while taking both matches of the regular-season series for the first time since 2013.

Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) powered the Lady Railsplitters with 13 kills on a .324 clip to go along with five digs. Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) had 12 kills and two blocks, while Jamie Jehne (Hollywood, Fla.) produced seven kills on just 11 attempts for a .545 percentage. Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio), who was tabbed as the AstroTurf SAC Volleyball Player of the Week earlier in the day, had five kills with three digs and two blocks. Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) finished in triple-double territory with 37 assists, eight digs and five kills. Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) led all players with 19 digs.

Tusculum was led by Sarah Bouley's eight kills and nine digs. Laryssa Welch and Cassie Born had seven kills apiece, while Mariah Lewis and Rachel Garnett chipped in six kills each. Hallie Zumack and Shannon Murphy combined for 36 assists, with Zumack pacing that tandem with 20 helpers.

The Lady Railsplitters grabbed an 11-9 lead in the first set following a kill by Brock, but the Pioneers punched back with a 5-0 run, taking a 14-11 lead on back-to-back kills by Welch. Following a timeout, Lincoln Memorial regained the momentum and took an 18-17 lead on a Tusculum attack error. The lead changed hands several times down the stretch, with Tusculum pulling ahead 22-21 on another kill by Welch. However, the Lady Railsplitters ended the set on a 4-0 run, capped by a Whiteaker ace.

It was all LMU early in the second set as the Lady Railsplitters raced out to a 9-3 lead, a stretch that was powered by three kills from Brock. Tusculum responded with a 5-0 run, which forced the Lady Railsplitters to burn a timeout. Lincoln Memorial never relinquished the lead, though, winning six of the next seven points to establish a commanding 15-9 advantage. The Pioneers later closed the gap to 20-19 on an ace, but the Lady Railsplitters were able to hold off Tusculum and win 25-21 on a kill by Jehne.

The Lady Railsplitters led from start to finish in the third set, pulling ahead 7-4 on a kill by Sam Cash. Kills from Holland and Cash later ballooned the lead to 17-10 and forced Tusculum to burn a timeout. The Pioneers won the first three points following that timeout, but LMU answered with a 6-0 run, capped by a Sam Cash ace. Brock wrapped up the 25-19 victory with a kill.

The Lady Railsplitters return to action this weekend, heading to Salisbury, N.C. to face the Catawba Indians at 7 p.m on Friday.
