Harding's 21 rebounds pace LMU in 90-71 win over King

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Five players scored in double figures and Josey Harding (Middletown, Ohio) had one of the best rebounding performances in school history as the Lady Railsplitters led from wire to wire in the 90-71 win over King Saturday afternoon.

LMU improves to 4-0 for the first time since the 1991-92 season and for only the third time in the program's modern era.

Harding pulled down 21 rebounds to lead all players, which is the third-best rebounding effort in a game by a Lady Railsplitter behind Robin Cox' 25 vs. North Greenville in Feb. 1996 and 22 by Lori Neely vs. Bristol in 1986. She also became only the third player in program history to have more than 20 rebounds in a game.

Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) and Karsen Sims (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) paced LMU in scoring with 15 points each. Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) added in 14 points while Sydney Duggins (Oliver Springs, Tenn.) scored 12 and Ross Mathis (Greer, S.C.) chipped in 11 points.

King was led by 13 points apiece from Whitney Mitchell and Ashley Albertson.

LMU out shot the Tornado 42.9 percent to 35.7 percent from the field, 43.3 percent to 17.6 percent from three point range and 78.6 percent to 75.0 percent from the charity stripe.

Harding got things going early as LMU won the tip and drove to the basket. Sims missed the shot but Harding grabbed the rebound and put it in to give LMU the 2-0 lead. An Albertson layup a minute later tied the game at 2-2. Following a pair of missed shots on both ends, Coker's first three pointer of the game at the 7:38 mark sparked a 16-3 run by the Lady Railsplitters over the next 3:53 to put LMU up 21-5. King would make a run themselves to cut the lead to 23-13 at the end of the first quarter.

King would not get any closer in the second quarter as the Lady Railsplitters would hit five three pointers in the frame to take a 52-32 lead into halftime.

The third period saw the teams trade baskets with King cutting the lead to 15 before seeing LMU pull back out to as much as 25 points.

A Tornado jumper by Kori West would get King back to 78-63 with 5:02 remaining, but LMU would maintain their advantage down the stretch and hold on for the 90-71 win.

The Lady Railsplitters will open South Atlantic Conference play as they travel to Jefferson City for their 90th all-time meeting with Carson-Newman Tuesday evening. Tip-off is set for six p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse. The game will be broadcast regionally by WVLT-TV on their MyVLT channel, which is Channel 14 on Sunset Digital and Vyve Broadband and channel 2 on Time-Warner Cable in the Tri-State area.
