HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Newberry Wolves (7-4, 3-3 SAC) buried 20 three-pointers to power a 107-102 victory over the 23rd-ranked Railsplitters (8-3, 4-2 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Tex Turner Arena.
Â
Lincoln Memorial trailed by 11 points at the half, but rallied to take the lead in the second half. However, the Wolves accounted for the second-most three-pointers on the second-most three-point attempts (47) in South Atlantic Conference history to snap the Railsplitters' five-game winning streak.
Â
"It's disappointing in every aspect," LMU head coach
Josh Schertz said. "Credit to Newberry; they came out and played extremely hard and extremely tough. I thought they were the aggressors from the jump. Our attention to detail was horrendous. We talked early in the game about not over-helping if we got dribble drove. And guys were opening their shoulders and letting them get deep and we were over-helping.
Â
"In the second half we tried to guard a little bit and tried to ramp it up at times, but we're just not very good and we're undisciplined."
Â
The Railsplitters shot 55.7 percent from the field, converting 39 of their 70 field-goal attempts. However, Lincoln Memorial shot just 31.8 percent (7-for-22) from three-point territory while going 17-for-28 at the free throw line for a 60.7 percent mark.
Â
"Free-throw shooting continues to be a problem. We're just not a good a free-throw shooting team. We've worked on it, but we just don't make them."
Â
By comparison, Newberry shot just 44.6 percent in the contest, but went 20-for-47 from three-point range and drained 21 free throws.
Â
Trevon Shaw (St. Helena Island, S.C.) paced the Railsplitters with 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.) notched 20 points, 14 rebounds, four assists and two steals, while
Chris Perry (Bartow, Fla.) also scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting to go along with eight rebounds before fouling out after 20 minutes of work.
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) scored 18 points, but went just 2-for-8 from the arc. No other LMU player finished with more than seven points.
Â
Newberry hit 11 of its 20 three-pointers in the first half and built a 56-45 lead at the break.
Â
The Wolves opened on a 7-0 run before the Railsplitters finally got on the board with a bucket from Perry at the 17:42 mark. Newberry continued to lead until
Deshawn Patterson (Lenoir, N.C.) put Lincoln Memorial ahead 11-10 on a basket with 15 minutes remaining in the half.
Â
Neither team gained much separation over the next passage of play, but an 8-0 Newberry run put the Wolves ahead 33-26 with just over eight minutes left in the half. The Wolves' lead hit 11 at 39-28 a minute later on a three-pointer from Xavier Hill. The Railsplitters later pulled within four points, but a 7-0 flurry extended the deficit back to 11 with 4:14 left in the half.
Â
Mason Spease would score with two seconds left to send the Wolves into the break with an 11-point advantage.
Â
The Railsplitters chipped away at the Wolves' lead early in the second half, but a Lamell Washington jumper at the 15:41 mark made it 66-56 in favor of Newberry. However, Lincoln Memorial reeled off a 13-2 run over the next stretch and took a 69-68 lead on a three from Pinson with just over 12 minutes left.
Â
The Wolves took the lead back on a three-pointer from Marshall Lange and eventually extended its lead to 76-71 on two free throws from Washington. Newberry's lead hit 82-74 with nine minutes left on a three-pointer from James Stepp, but the Railsplitters used a 7-1 run to close the gap to 83-81 with seven minutes remaining.
Â
However, the Wolves used a pair of Gerald Evans' threes to push back out to a 91-83 lead with 4:42 to go. Once again, the Railsplitters fought all the way back, using a 10-2 run to tie it up at 93-93 on a bucket by
Cornelius Taylor (Claxton, Ga.). The game was tied one more time, but a three from Stepp put the Wolves ahead for good at 98-95.
Â
Lincoln Memorial cut the lead to 100-99 on a three from Pinson with 49 seconds left, but the Wolves made seven free throws down the closing stretch to ice the 107-102 victory.
Â
Gerald Evans led all players with 29 points on a 10-for-11 mark from the free-throw line and a 5-for-11 mark from the arc. He also dished out five assists.
