HARROGATE, Tenn. – Four players scored in double figures as No. 11/12 Lincoln Memorial University led from wire to wire as the Lady Railsplitters blasted Newberry 79-53 Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Railsplitters improve to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the South Atlantic Conference with the win. They are ranked 11
th in the WBCA/USA Today NCAA Division II Coaches' Poll and 12
th in the D2SIDA National Media Poll.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) scored 13 points,
Sydnie Anderson (Cleveland, Tenn.) had 12 and
Karsen Sims (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) chipped in 10.
Gerda Paulauskaite (Telsiai, Lithuania) had a career-high eight rebounds.
Shelby Britten led the Wolves with 18 points and Samara Hill added in 13. Jaya Schultz led Newberry in rebounding with seven rebounds.
LMU out shot Newberry by a 40.3%-to-35.2% margin from the field, 41.2%-to-26.3% from three-point range and 72.0%-to-71.4% from the free throw line. They also out-rebounded the wolves 48-34, had 32 points in the paint to Newberry's 12 and the bench out-scored the Wolves 22-5.
It was all LMU early as a basket from Pittman and five quick points from Anderson gave LMU the 7-0 lead. Newberry would eventually cut the lead to 10-6, but then LMU went on a 9-2 run to go up 19-8 with 2:19 remaining in the quarter. Hill would score five points for the Wolves and cut the score to 20-15, but a Pittman trey as time expired put the Lady Railsplitters ahead 23-15 after the first stanza.
Another 10-2 run by LMU to start the second period broke open the game. Newberry would cut it to 36-27 with 1:22 left in the half, but a three pointer by
Ross Mathis (Greer, S.C.) and a Sims jumper put LMU ahead at intermission 43-29.
The Wolves would cut it to 14 on two occasions in the third quarter, but each time LMU had an answer and held Newberry to only 12 points in the frame.
LMU put the game away in the fourth period as they went on an 18-4 run over 6:01 and coasted to the 79-53 win.
The Lady Railsplitters will now have a few days off for Christmas. They will next take the court on Jan. 4, 2017 when they host Mars Hill in a SAC contest. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
