Lady Railsplitters beat Tuskegee, lose to Young Harris on day one of CSU Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Junior shortstop Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) hit a pair of home runs to help the Lady Railsplitters (1-4) split on day one of the CSU Cougar Classic on Saturday in Columbus, Ga. Lincoln Memorial defeated Tuskegee 4-0 to pick up the first win of the 2016 campaign before falling to Young Harris by a final of 6-2 in Saturday's matinee.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 4, Tuskegee 0

Pitchers Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and Kenzie Dixon (Church Hill, Tenn.) combined for a three-hit shutout of the winless Golden Tigers, while Moose and Kristen McAndrew (Belmont, N.C.) supplied the damage in a three-run second inning that powered the victory.

Taylor improved to 1-1 on the season after limiting Tuskegee to two hits and two walks over 5 1/3 innings, a span during which she struck out five batters. Dixon picked up the save after holding the Golden Tigers to one hit with a strikeout over the final 1 2/3 frames.

The Lady Railsplitters' first five batters were set down in order, but Allie Jones (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch with two outs in the top of the second to spark a rally, as Moose connected on a two-run blast in the very next at-bat. McAndrew followed that up with a solo home run to give Lincoln Memorial a 3-0 lead.

Tuskegee opened the game with a lead-off single in the bottom of the first inning, but wouldn't get another hit until Haley Plato singled in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Golden Tigers only put one runner in scoring position in the contest, and that also came in the first inning, when Cari Driver singled and made it to second base on a groundout.

Meanwhile, the Lady Railsplitters tacked on to their lead in the top of the seventh inning, as Savannah Couch (Colonial Heights, Va.) laced a two-out triple and scored in the next at-bat on an RBI double by Parker Brantley (Zebulon, N.C.).

Six different players finished with one hit for the Lady Railsplitters, led by Moose's 1-for-2 showing with a run and an RBI. Lindsay Cecil (Winston-Salem, N.C.) went 1-for-3 with a walk in her debut for Lincoln Memorial.

Acey Spence took the loss for Tuskegee after serving up six hits and four earned runs over seven innings.

Game Two: Young Harris 6, Lincoln Memorial 2

The Mountain Lions hit three home runs, including a back-breaking three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning, to defeat the Lady Railsplitters in the third all-time meeting between the two programs.

Hannah Harrison led off the bottom of the first inning with a round-tripper to give Young Harris an early 1-0 lead, while an RBI groundout by Lindsay Tudor increased the Mountain Lions' lead later that same inning.

The score held at 2-0 until Moose broke the Lady Railsplitters' scoring drought with a one-out, solo home run in the top of the fifth inning. After that, BriAnna Schrimpf (Chandler, Ariz.) kept the inning rolling with a two-out, pinch-hit double, which resulted in a run in the next at-bat on Cecil's game-tying single.

The game was tied for only a very short span, though, as Sarah Magill busted a solo home run with one out in the home half of the fifth inning to put the Mountain Lions back in front 3-2.

The Lady Railsplitters would strand the potential tying run at second in the top of the sixth after Jacie Pittman's (Travelers Rest, S.C.) two-out double went for naught, while Young Harris put the game out of reach in the home half of that inning with a two-out, three-run home run by Magill, her second of the game.

Lincoln Memorial went down in 1-2-3 order in the top of the seventh to suffer the 6-2 setback.

Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead a seven-hit attack for the Lady Railsplitters. Cecil and Moose drove in the only two runs of the game.

Alicia Raymond (Cleveland, Tenn.) was on the hook for the loss after giving up seven hits and four runs over four innings of relief. Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) made the start, surrendering three hits, two runs and three walks over two innings.

Young Harris' one through three hitters combined for seven of the Mountain Lions' 10 hits. Magill went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored to lead that effort.

The Lady Railsplitters complete the CSU Cougar Classic on Sunday, when they take on host Columbus State at 11:30 a.m. before squaring off against No. 9 nationally-ranked Georgia College at 2 p.m.
