Turnovers costly in Lady Railsplitter loss at Queens

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A combination of 23 turnovers and 37 percent shooting proved to be too much for the Lady Railsplitters (15-10, 12-8 SAC) to overcome as they fell 58-52 at Queens (5-20, 3-17 SAC) Saturday afternoon.

Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) led the way for LMU with nine points while Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) and Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) had eight points apiece. Pittman also led LMU on the boards with eight rebounds.

For the game, The Lady Railsplitters shot 37% (20-54) from the field, 28.6% (6-12) from behind the three-point arc and 60% (6-10) from the free throw line. LMU continued their domination on the boards as they outrebounded an opponent for the 22nd time in 25 games as they pulled down 43 rebounds to Queens' 29. the Lady Railsplitter bench outscored the bench of the Royals by an 18-0 margin and LMU also had a 9-7 advantage in second chance points.

The first quarter was a see-saw affair as the lead changed hands four times and there were three ties before jumpers from Guy and Kiara Rawls (Killeen, Texas) put LMU ahead 12-9. A layup by Queens' Erin Brundage cut the lead to one with 3:53 remaining before a three-pointer by Coker put the Lady Railsplitters ahead 15-11. McKell Oliverio answered for Queens with a three-pointer of her own only to see Coker hit another trey to put LMU back up by four points. QU's Carmen Richardson then hit back to back baskets to tie the game at 18-18 at the end of the first quarter.

Queens then came out in the second quarter and regained the lead with layups by Maggie Stewart and Richardson. The Lady Railsplitters would cut the lead back to one on two occasions before a 9-1 Royals run put the lead up to ten with 2:37 left in the half. Three-pointers by Brooke Taylor (White Pine, Tenn.) and Sydnie Anderson (Cleveland, Tenn.) would cut into the Queens lead but the Royals would reign at the half by a 35-29 score.

The third period saw the Lady Railsplitters cut into the lead on several occasions only to see Queens make a big basket to shut the door on any comeback attempts. Free throws by Pittman cut the lead to 35-33, but that was as close as it would get until a late run by the Lady Railsplitters spanning the end of the third and beginning of the fourth frames cut the lead to 47-46 off a Pittman layup.

That was as close as the Lady Railsplitters would come as Queens would hold on for the 58-52 win.

Brundage led the Royals with 14 points. Oliverio had 13 points, followed by Richardson with 12. Stewart added in 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. Karlesha Thompson led Queens in rebounding with seven.
