ANDERSON, S.C. – As the final week of the regular season arrives, the third-ranked Railsplitters (24-2, 20-0 SAC) will try to secure the program's sixth straight 25-win season and push their winning streak to 15 games on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Anderson, S.C. to take on the Anderson Trojans (7-19, 5-15 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference action at 8 p.m.
Lincoln Memorial clinched its fourth straight SAC regular season championship and fifth in the past six seasons on Saturday with a convincing 92-66 win over the No. 6 nationally-ranked Queens Royals in Charlotte. In that game, the Railsplitters held the nation's second-most efficient offense to a season-low 28.6 percent shooting, which is Queens' worst mark from the field since at least before the 2011-12 campaign.
Gerel Simmons (Accokeek, Md.) paced the Railsplitters with a game-high 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting coupled with five rebounds, while
Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Jalen Steele (Knoxville, Tenn.) put up 16 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Along with solidifying the Railsplitters' stranglehold on the top spot in the Southeast Region rankings, that victory also moved Lincoln Memorial one win away from notching its sixth consecutive 25-win season. To put that achievement into perspective, the LMU men's basketball program had just four total 25-win seasons in the 86 seasons on file before head coach
Josh Schertz took over in 2008.
A win would also match LMU's 2014-15 team for the most South Atlantic Conference victories in league history and move the Railsplitters one win away from becoming the first team in SAC history to run the table in conference play. Since the 1991-92 campaign, a SAC program has lost just one league game five times, but no team has ever finished with an unblemished record.
The Railsplitters will be looking to defeat Anderson for the sixth straight time, as Lincoln Memorial took down the Trojans 85-72 in the first meeting this season on January 13 at Tex Turner Arena. The Railsplitters trailed the Trojans by four points late in the first half, but closed on a 22-3 run to take a 46-31 lead into the break, which held up in the second half. Choice had 26 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead Lincoln Memorial, while
Curtis McMillion (Fayetteville, N.C.) scored a season-high 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Randall Shaw paced the Trojans with 27 points on 6-of-9 shooting from three-point range.
The first season of the Jeff Brookman era has not been a smooth one for Anderson. The Trojans, who have been eliminated from postseason contention, lost 10 straight games from January 9 to February 10, but they snapped that skid with a 74-72 win over Catawba last Saturday. Anderson followed that up with a 78-70 loss at last-place Brevard, but most recently bounced back by stunning Lenoir-Rhyne 78-70 at home.
The Trojans are 6-6 at home this season as compared to a 0-13 mark on the road.
Anderson has been brutal on the offensive end of the court this season, which is likely a product of a roster made up almost entirely of underclassmen. The Trojans are 11th in the SAC and 266th in the nation in scoring with 69.3 points per game while ranking 11th in the league and 245th in the nation in field-goal percentage with a 42.7 percent clip. Anderson is above average on the defensive end, where they allowed 74 points per game on 43.3 percent shooting, which is the fourth-best field-goal percentage defense in the league.
The Trojans are led by Randall Shaw's 19.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game on 44.6 percent shooting. Maurice Howard is the only other player averaging double figures for Anderson with 12.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game on a 41.2 percent clip from the field. Tre' Fields is averaging 9.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, while Rakish Taylor is contributing a near double-double with 8.8 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds per game.
The Railsplitters have won their last three appearances in Anderson, as they topped the Trojans 65-61 in last season's meeting at the Abney Center despite shooting 36 percent in the first half. Choice buried seven three-pointers to lead the Railsplitters with 25 points, while Simmons had 12 points in 19 minutes off of the bench. Rakish Taylor scored 13 points off the bench for the Trojans.
Lincoln Memorial has won 23 straight SAC road games dating back to the 2013-14 campaign.
