HARROGATE, Tenn. -- A three-pointer by senior
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) gave the Lady Railsplitters (16-11, 13-9 SAC) the lead with 6:15 remaining and they would never relinquish it as they came from behind to defeat Catawba (15-13, 12-10 SAC) Saturday afternoon in the Tex Turner Arena.
The win gives the Lady Railsplitters the fifth-place berth in the upcoming South Atlantic Conference Tournament.
LMU was led by
Kiara Rawls (Killeen, Texas) with 14 points. Guy had 13 points and
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) added in 10 points.
Kortnay Cox (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) led all players on the boards with 13 rebounds. LMU shot 35.5% (22-62 for the game from the field, 25% (4-16) from three-point range and 87.5% (14-16) from the free throw line. The Lady Railsplitters out-rebounded Catawba 49-35 and had 21 second-chance points to Catawba's 16.
The Indians had the hot shooting touch in the first quarter, hitting over 50 percent from the the field and the free throw line. A three-pointer by Bri Johnson and a jumper by Jada Huntley gave Catawba the early 5-0 lead. The teams then traded baskets for the rest of the quarter, with LMU cutting it to 17-16 off a free throw by
Josey Harding (Middletown, Ohio) with 1:44 remaining. A free throw 10 seconds later by Catawba's Zhaquondalee Greer would give the Indians the 18-16 lead that they would maintain through the end of the quarter.
Catawba quickly pulled the lead back out to nine points. LMU would then cut it back to 25-18 after two free throws by
Sydnie Anderson (Cleveland, Tenn.) only to see Catawba's Serena Brown drive down the court and find Terri Rogers open for a short jumper to put Catawba up 27-18 with 5:43 left in the half. Both teams then went ice-cold for the next five minutes.
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) broke the drought with as she rebounded a miss by Rawls and put it back with 50 seconds remaining. After a Catawba turnover,
Karsen Sims (Gatlinburg, Tenn.) would find
Jasmine Kelly (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) open and Kelly hit the short jumper to make the score 27-22 at the half.
LMU would make several tries to cut into the lead in the third period, but the Indians always had an answer and maintained a 43-37 lead after three frames.
After Catawba hit a basket early in the fourth to go up 45-37, the Lady Railsplitters turned their game up a notch and they went on a 12-2 run sparked by a Guy three-pointer. Anderson hit a jumper to tie the game at 47-47 with 6:29 left and then Catawba's Brown picked up the offensive foul on the next possession. Guy then took the inbounds pass and buried a three-pointer from about 33 feet out to give LMU their first lead of the game with 6:15 left. A jumper by Kelly then bookended the run and gave LMU their largest lead of the game, 52-47, with 4:24 remaining. LMU would pull back out to a four point lead over the next minute, only to see Catawba tie the game with a couple of quick baskets. Rawls hit a layup to put LMU back up by two and the Lady Railsplitters would go 6-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to come away with the 62-58 win.
Catabwa was led by Johnson's 14 points and four rebounds. Brown added in four rebounds of her own to go along with five assists. For the game the Indians hit 35.9 (23-64) from the field, 28.6% (4-14) from behind the arc and 72.7% (8-11) from the charity stripe.
Quick HitsIt was Senior Night, and LMU said goodbye to the five seniors before the game. Seniors Guy, Cox, Kelly, Rawls and Lakeshia Beasley (College Park, Ga.) all made the start in their final appearance in the Tex Turner Arena.... The four three-pointers by Guy tied her career high for made three-pointers.... LMU is now 9-11 against Catawba all-time and 7-3 against the Indians in the Tex Turner Arena.... This marks the second time that LMU has swept Catawba in the regular season. The other time was in the 2013-14 season.... LMU coach Krystal is 2-0 on Senior Night as last year's team defeated Wingate 63-60.... LMU makes the SAC Tournament field for the fifth consecutive season and for nine out of the ten seasons they have been in the SAC.
Up nextThe Lady Railsplitters will travel to Mars Hill to face the Lions in the quarterfinal round of the SAC Tournament on Tuesday. The Lions earned the fourth seed after they lost at Lenoir-Rhyne earlier today. This will be the first time the two teams have met in the SAC Tournament.
