HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Anderson Trojans (5-9, 1-2 SAC) hit four home runs and hung up a crooked number in five different innings to pace a 24-10 win over the Railsplitters (10-3, 2-1 SAC) in game three of a South Atlantic Conference baseball series at Lamar Hennon Field on Sunday. Lincoln Memorial won the series by virtue of Saturday's doubleheader sweep, but the loss snapped an eight-game winning streak.
Â
The Trojans opened the game by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. An RBI double from Steven Cooper kicked off the scoring in that frame, while a three-run blast from Carson Barrett capped the scoring and made it 5-0 early.
Â
After Anderson added a run on a wild pitch in the top of the second, the Railsplitters scored four runs in the bottom of that inning to cut into the Trojans' lead. A throwing error allowed the first run to cross for the home team, while RBI singles from
Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and
Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) paired with an
HD Dillard (Woodstock, Ga.) sacrifice fly out pulled the Railsplitters within two runs at 6-4.
Â
The Trojans erased every bit of that work in the top of the third inning, though, as Garrett Bernardo and Tyler Miller both hit two-run home runs to fuel a five-run inning that increased the Anderson advantage to 11-4.
Â
With the Trojans' lead holding steady at 12-5, the Railsplitters scored three times in the bottom of the fourth frame.
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) brought the first run in the inning with an RBI groundout, while
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) drove in two more with a single.
Â
Anderson answered once again in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs on a bases-loaded walk and a run-scoring fielder's choice, as LJ Newman beat out a throw to home to make it a 14-8 lead.
Â
The Trojans broke the game wide open in the top of the eighth inning, as Kyle Bailey drove in two runs with a double and Barrett connected on a grand slam - his second home run of the day - to power a seven-run inning.
Â
Neiderland hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, but Anderson would tack on three more runs in the visitor's half of the ninth. Dillard drove in a run with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to cut the final margin of defeat to 24-10.
Â
Neiderland paced the LMU offense, which finished with 13 hits total, as the Thompson Station, Tenn. native went 4-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. Ewers, Dillard, Valdez and
Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) added two hits apiece, while Dillard and Ewers each had a pair of RBI.
Â
The Railsplitters used six pitchers to get through Sunday's contest, with freshman right-hander
Matt Mullenbach (Urbandale, Iowa) suffering the loss after allowing six hits and seven earned runs with six strikeouts in two innings of work. All six pitchers that made an appearance allowed at least three runs to score.
Â
Anderson's 24 runs were the most given up by Lincoln Memorial since No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville scored 29 runs at Lamar Hennon in March of last season. Prior to that, the Railsplitters had not allowed 20 runs in a game since losing 21-16 at Brevard in 2012.
Â
Barrett led the Trojan offense with a pair of home runs and eight RBI, while Miller went 4-for-5 with two RBI, a walk and three runs scored. Bernardo was 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Zach McIlroy added two hits and three RBI.
Â
Anderson pitcher Thomas Smith was credited with the victory despite allowing 10 hits and eight earned runs over 3 2/3 innings of work.
Â
The Railsplitters return to action on Wednesday, March 2, when they travel to Bristol, Tenn. to take on the King Tornado at 2 p.m.
