Harrogate, Tenn. -- On a night when Splitter Nation was celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Tex Turner Arena, the current incarnation of the Lady Railsplitters (13-7, 10-5 SAC) picked up their 13th win of the seaosn with the 81-44 win over Brevard (1-17, 0-14 SAC) Wednesday evening.
Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) led LMU with 17 points off the bench as she went 5-8 from the field, 2-4 from three point range and a perfect 5-5 from the free throw line.
Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) had her ninth double-double of the season as she scored 14 points and pulled down eleven rebounds.
Britney Guy (Locust Grove, Ga.) also had 12 points and four assists. LMU had 22 points off turnover, 26 second-chance points and 65 points off the bench.
For the game, The Lady Railsplitters shot 38.9% (28-72) from the field, 33.3% (6-18) from behind the arc and 79.2% (19-24) from the charity stripe. They outrebounded Brevard 54-35, had 15 assists to Brevard's eight and 16 steals to the Tornados' three.
When the two teams met in Brevard back on Dec. 14, the Lady Railsplitters overcame a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to pull out the 72-70 win off a jumper by Guy with three seconds left. This game would not be as dramatic. Brevard's Hadara Bannister scored the first basket of the game to put the Tornados up 2-0 with 9:10 left in the first quarter. LMU then went on an 13-2 run to close out the quarter with a 13-4 lead.
The second quarter saw the Lady Railsplitters pull out to a double digit lead. Brevard cut it back to nine before a three-pointer by Coker off an assist by
Kortnay Cox (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) put LMU up 32-20 going into halftime.
The third and fourth quarters saw the Lady Railsplitters extend the lead even further, giving Coach
Krystal Evans a chance to give the entire bench significant minutes as LMU cruised to the 81-44 victory.
Brevard was led by Lynsey Crisp and Shelby Wolfe, who had 10 points apiece. Whitney DeMoss led all players with 13 rebounds. The Tornados shot 28.6% (16-56) from the field, 13.3% (2-15) from three-point range and 66.7% 10-15 from the free throw line.
Quick HitsWith the win the Lady Railsplitters move to third in the South Atlantic Conference standings... LMU outrebounded their opponent for the 17th time this season.... They improved their all-time record against Brevard to 18-2 overall and 9-1 in the Tex Turner Arena... The 25th anniversary of the Arena was celbrated throughout the night. The first game in the Tex Turner Arena was on Feb. 2, 1991 with the Lady Railsplitters defeating Alabama-Huntsville 112-95. LMU's Debbie Hoskins-Green scored the first points in the building.... Counting the win over Brevard, the Lady Railsplitters have played 327 games in the Arena and have a 239-88 record.... The win over Brevard was LMU's 816th all-time, according to available records dating back to 1925.
Up NextThe Lady Railsplitters hit the road for the first game of a two game road swing as they travel to Wingate for a Saturday 2:00 p.m. tilt. LMU will be looking to avenge a 78-67 loss to the Bulldogs back on Dec. 16 in the Turner Arena. Wingate comes into Saturday's contest having lost five of their last six games, including a 62-61 loss at Newberry Wednesday evening. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3.
