HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitter tennis team (1-2) picked up not only their first win of the season but their first won over Union College this century with the 8-1 win Sunday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Complex.

LMU's last win over Union came back in the 1998 season under legendary head coach Charlie Poteat.

The Railsplitters swept Union in all three doubles matches to take the early 3-0 lead. Moritz Hoerner and David Segarra won a close victory over Adrian Frutos and Borna Bartolovic at the No. 1 flight by an 8-6 margin. The no. 2 flight was also a close match as Pepe Batalla and Josha Peress bested Tiago Gil and Ignacio Tejerina 8-5. At no. 3, Joshua Coulthard and Guilherme Rocha defeated Egil Brudvik and Ethan Wright 8-3.

LMU then picked up wins at No. 3 and 4 singles as Batalla beat Frutos in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 at No. 3 while Peress cruised by Brudvik 6-1, 6-2. 

Union picked up their lone win of the day as Tejerina needed a tiebreaking third set to get past Coulthard 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 at the No. 1 flight.

The No. 2 singles flight gave LMU the team victory as Hoerner went to a tiebreaker set to defeat Bartolovic 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 and put the Railsplitters up 5-0.

Segarra defeated Gil 8-4 at the No. 5 flight and at No. 6 Rocha handled Wright 8-1 to put the Railsplitters ahead by the final 8-1 margin.

After playing three matches in three days, the Railsplitters now have ten days off before they travel to Bristol to face King University on Feb. 17 at 2 p.m.
