Clark, Augustine go deep as Railsplitters rally for 8-6 win over Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) and Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) both hit home runs and combined for seven RBI to lead the Railsplitters (17-6, 8-2 SAC) to an 8-6 win over the Catawba Indians (13-11, 5-5 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night in Salisbury, N.C. With the win, Lincoln Memorial snaps a six-game losing streak to Catawba and won in Salisbury for the first time since 2009.

Clark went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI, while Augustine went 2-for-3 with a round tripper and three RBI to pace a Railsplitter offense that rallied from a 3-0 deficit by exploding for eight total runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added a pair of singles with a walk and two runs, while Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) and Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) had a double apiece.

Catawba scattered 12 hits around the yard. Malachi Hanes went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead that effort for the Indians, while Dylan Richardson went 3-for-6 with a double. Jeremy Simpson added a pair of singles.

The Indians grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Luke Setzer reached on an error and Will Albertson singled back up the middle to put two runners on for Kyle Smith, who drove in both runners with a double.

The score held at 2-0 until Hanes increased the Indians' advantage to 3-0 with a lead-off, solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.

After being kept scoreless for five innings, the Railsplitters came unglued in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs on two big hits. Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew a lead-off walk and HD Dillard (Woodstock, Ga.) was hit by a pitch in front of Augustine, who hammered a three-run home run to left centerfield to tie the game. Another walk and a catcher's interference then put two more runners on for Clark, who blasted another three-run homer to left field to put the Railsplitters ahead 6-3.

Catawba answered right back in the bottom of the sixth and scored three runs to draw the game back even at 6-6, but the Railsplitters sparked a two-out rally in the top of the seventh and took the lead for good.

Augustine was hit by a pitch and Kalman singled to put two runners for Neiderland, who doubled down the right-field line to make it 7-6 in favor of the Railsplitters. Clark then singled to add an insurance run and send Lincoln Memorial into the bottom of the seventh with an 8-6 edge.

The Indians put two runners on in both the eighth and ninth innings, but Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) worked out of both of those jams to pick up his third save of the season.

Morabito preserved the win for Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.), who moved to 1-1 on the season after allowing just one earned run and two hits over two innings of relief work. Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) made the start for the Railsplitters, tossing five innings with nine hits and two earned runs allowed with five strikeouts.

Shaefer Shepard suffered the loss for Catawba after allowing seven hits and seven earned runs over seven innings of action. He struck out 11 in the loss.

The Railsplitters complete their three-game SAC set at Catawba with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Newman Park in Salisbury, N.C.
