WINGATE, N.C. -- The Lady Railsplitter lacrosse team (2-5, 0-3 SAC) scored five unanswered goals against Wingate (5-3, 1-1 SAC) but were unable to overcome a 12 goal first half by the Bulldogs as they fell 15-6 Saturday afternoon.
Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) and
Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) led LMU with two goals apiece, with Kelly also notching an assist as well.
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) and
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) accounted for the other two goals. Goalie
Shannon Novak (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) had nine saves and nine ground balls to lead LMU in both categories.
The first half was all Wingate as they scored 11 goals while holding LMU to only eight shots. James had several chances to score, but WU keeper Arion Pierre managed to stop each one.
In the second half, Wingate picked up another goal early before the LMU shots begin to find the back of the net. Beddington got things going as she took the short pass from Kelly and put the Lady Railsplitters on the board with 20:39 remaining. At the 16:00 mark Moss scored her 19th goal of the season with her unassisted goal. A little over a minute later she scored number 20 off a pass from
Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.). LMU won the ensuing draw and Kelly was fouled a few seconds later. She then scored her seventh goal of the season on the free position shot to cut the lead to 12-4 and force a Wingate timeout.
Wingate won the draw after the timeout but then turned the ball over. James took advantage to score her 13th goal of the season with 12:48 left in the game. The Bulldogs then scored four more goals over the next several minutes to extend the lead to 15-5. Kelly would score again with 3:30 remaining but Wingate then went into a stall offense and held on for the 15-6 win.
Wingate was led by Emily Nosek and Brittany Andrews, who each had four goals.
LMU will travel to Pikeville College on Monday for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Bears.
