Railsplitters power through Davis & Elkins in doubleheader sweep

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (20-8) combined to hit six home runs in a doubleheader sweep of the Davis & Elkins Senators (6-16) in NCAA Division II baseball action on Saturday at Lamar Hennon Field.

Lincoln Memorial, which won all three games in its series against the Senators, is back in action on Wednesday, March 30, heading to Greeneville, Tenn. for a mid-week match-up against the Tusculum Pioneers, set for a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 15, Davis & Elkins 1

Redshirt-sophomore Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) became just the fourth player in program history to hit three home runs in a game and the first since Jonathan Lowe accomplished that feat against Ohio Valley last season, powering an offensive attack that saw the Railsplitters rack up 16 hits and race away from the Senators.

Ewers went 3 for 4 at the plate and drove in six runs, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the second, a grand slam in the bottom of the third and another solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. He was one of four Lincoln Memorial players with multiple hits in the game, as Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) went 4 for 5 with two RBI and a double, HD Dillard (Woodstock, Ga.) went 2 for 4 with a double, and Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a double.

Freshman left-hander Ethan Elliott (Knoxville, Tenn.) improved to 6-1 on the season for the Railsplitters after shutting the Senators down over his five-inning start, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts over that span. Wes Todd (Franklin, Tenn.) was nearly flawless in 3 1/3 innings of relief, holding the Senators hitless over that span with one unearned run.

Davis & Elkins finished with just four hits in the contest. Tyler Mason led that effort by going 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Austin Main was saddled with the loss after serving up seven hits and 10 runs (nine earned) in 2 1/3 innings of work.

The Railsplitters scored a run in the first and two runs in the second, but put the game out of reach in the bottom of the third, batting around and tallying eight runs. Kalman kicked off the scoring in that frame with a run-scoring double, while Ewers blasted a grand slam. Augustine capped the inning with a two-run single.

Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) homered in the bottom of the fifth, while Ewers belted his third home run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Between those two dingers, Davis & Elkins accounted for its only run of the game, as Tyler Honeycutt was hit by a pitch and scored on an error.

The Railsplitters tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the offensive eruption.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 11, Davis & Elkins 8

The Railsplitters fell behind early but rallied to complete the three-game sweep with an 11-8 win.

Eight of LMU's nine starters finished with a hit in the contest, as Lincoln Memorial piled up 14 hits with six going for extra bases. Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) finished 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBI, while Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) went 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kalman, Dillard, Augustine and Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) also finished with two hits in the game, while Valdez belted his second home run of the doubleheader.

Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) earned the win for the Railsplitters with two perfect innings of relief. He improves to 2-1 on the season after holding the Senators hitless with a pair of strikeouts.

The Senators scored eight runs on just seven hits. William Kendrick led the way by going 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. Owen Arbogast took the loss for Davis & Elkins, allowing one hit and three runs in an inning of relief work.

Valdez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first, but that was sandwiched around a four-run first and a two-run second for the Senators, who raced out to a commanding 6-1 lead. Davis & Elkins increased its lead to 7-1 in the top of the third, when Bragg Eastin singled and scored on a throwing error.

The Railsplitters nearly came all the way back in the bottom of the third, scoring five runs to close the gap to 7-6. Kalman, Neiderland and Rodriguez recorded run-scoring hits in the inning, while Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) completed the rally with a two-run, two-out double.

The Senators tacked onto its lead in the top of the fifth, as Will Oliver doubled home a run. But the Railsplitters erased that run and pulled back within one in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout by Neiderland.

Lincoln Memorial finally completed the comeback and took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth. A bases-loaded balk brought the tying run in, while Clark pummeled a three-run homer to catapult the Railsplitters into an 11-8 lead.

The Senators then went down in 1-2-3 order in the top of the seventh.
