Lady Railsplitters take two from Tusculum to even SAC record

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lady Railsplitters (16-19, 4-4 SAC) drew even in South Atlantic Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from the Tusculum Pioneers (15-21, 1-7 SAC) on Tuesday afternoon at Dorothy Neely Field. Lincoln Memorial scored four-plus runs in two different innings to power a 10-2 six-inning win over the Pioneers in game one before polishing off the sweep with a 5-4 victory in game two.

The Lady Railsplitters complete their six-game homestand on Saturday, when they host the Catawba Indians for a SAC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 10, Tusculum 2 (6 innings)

The Lady Railsplitters fell two hits short of their season-high mark, accumulating 12 in the contest with seven going for extra bases. Behind that offensive onslaught, Lincoln Memorial piled up four runs in the third and five in the sixth to end the game early.

Allie Jones (Ooltewah, Tenn.) went 3 for 4 with four RBI, a double and two runs scored to lead the charge, while BriAnna Schrimpf (Chandler, Ariz.) went 2 for 4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored. Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) hit a home run as part of a 2 for 3 showing at the plate that included three runs scored. Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBI.

Brianna Taylor (Ooltewah, Tenn.) tossed a complete game for the Lady Railsplitters while also hitting a home run. Taylor allowed just three hits and one earned run over six innings of work to improve to 10-8 on the season.

Eliza Davis was saddled with the loss for the Pioneer after serving up 10 earned runs and 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings. No Tusculum player had multiple hits in the game, but pinch hitter Jenna Restivo drove in two with a single in her only plate appearance.

After two and a half innings of scoreless softball, the Lady Railsplitters broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third, plating four runs with two outs in the frame. Lindsay Cecil (Winston-Salem, N.C.) sparked the rally with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Schrimpf's double. After a single by Moose, two runs scored on Jones' single down the right-field line. Johnson capped the scoring in the inning with a double into the gap in right center.

Taylor worked around a leadoff single in the top of the fourth to keep the Pioneers scoreless, but she experienced some trouble in the top of the fifth, as a single, a throwing error and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases with no outs. Restivo cut the Lady Railsplitters' lead in half with a two-run single, but Taylor forced a groundout, a strikeout and another groundout to prevent the Pioneers from getting any further.

The Lady Railsplitters then responded by scoring six unanswered runs. Moose kicked off that 6-0 closing run by hitting a solo home runs down the left-field line in the bottom of the fifth, while Taylor sparked a five-run sixth inning by leading off with a solo shot. After run-scoring hits by Schrimpf and Jones, Johnson brought the run rule into effect with a single back up the middle.

Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 5, Tusculum 4

The Pioneers outhit the Lady Railsplitters 15-7, but left 16 runners stranded on the bases, while Lincoln Memorial built an early lead and held on to complete the sweep.

Savannah Couch (Colonial Heights, Va.) led the Lady Railsplitters by going 2 for 2 with two RBI and a run scored, while Moose added two more hits with an RBI. Schrimpf also accounted for another RBI in the contest.

Senior right-hander Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) improved to 5-6 for the Lady Railsplitters after limiting Tusculum to one run on eight hits over four innings of work. Taylor was called on in relief midway through the game, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits in three innings.

The top three hitters in the Pioneers' batting order combined for eight hits, led by Taylor Battle's 4 for 5 showing. Carolyn Williamson went 2 for 4 with two runs scored, while Robin Stoner drove in two runs on two hits. Restivo doubled twice and drew a walk while posting an RBI.

Tusculum starter Cayla Cecil was stuck with the loss, falling to 5-5 on the year after giving up seven hits and three earned runs in six innings.

The Lady Railsplitters raced out to a 3-0 lead by scoring one run in the first and two more in the second. Couch led off the bottom of the first with a single and scored two batters later on a two-out single by Moose. Couch was back at it again in the second inning, plating two runs with a two-out single, which scored Teddi Collins (Germantown, Ohio) and Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.).

Tusculum got a run back in the top of the third, as Williamson doubled and scored on a two-bagger by Restivo.

The Pioneers stranded two on base in the fourth and went scoreless again in the top of the fifth despite loading the bases with no outs, while the Lady Railsplitters extended their cushion to 5-1 with two vital insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth.

A fielding error allowed Kristen McAndrew (Belmont, N.C.) to reach safely, sparking that inning for the Lady Railsplitters, while Cecil singled to put two runners on without an out. Schrimpf then singled in McAndrew to make it 4-1. Following a popout and a groundout, a muffed throw by the Pioneers' first baseman brought the Lady Railsplitters' final run across.

Trailing by four runs, Tusculum made things interesting down the stretch. In the top of the sixth, back-to-back singles from Battle and Williamson put the Pioneers in business. Stoner brought both runners home with a single to centerfield, while Rachel Wisner drove in another run with a two-out single later in the inning, closing the gap to 5-4. Tusculum put the potential tying run on second that inning after Morgan Ward singled, but a lineout got the Lady Railsplitters out of that jam.

The Pioneers threatened again in the top of the seventh, loading the bases after Battle singled, Stoner singled and Restivo was intentionally walked. However, Emily Hester popped out in the infield to clinch LMU's 5-4 victory.

With the two wins, the Lady Railsplitters swept a doubleheader from Tusculum for the first time since 2010 and snapped a recent rash of bad luck against the Pioneers. Entering Tuesday's twinbill, Tusculum had defeated Lincoln Memorial in eight of the last 10 meetings.
