Ewers and Kalman hit two home runs apiece to power Railsplitters in 27-8 rout of Shorter

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) both went deep twice as the Railsplitters (13-4) took advantage of a shaky Shorter pitching staff and pulverized the Hawks (10-10) 27-8 in NCAA Division II baseball action on Tuesday at Lamar Hennon Field. Lincoln Memorial extends its winning streak to four games in the victory, while the loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Hawks.

The Railsplitters set a program record by drawing 19 walks in the contest and piled up 16 hits to accumulate the program's most runs in a game since scoring 30 at Kentucky State in 2011. It marked only the fifth time ever that the Railsplitters racked up at least 27 runs in a game, tying for the third-highest scoring output in the program's single-game record book.

Six different players finished with multiple hits for Lincoln Memorial. Ewers went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs, seven RBI, two walks and three runs scored, while Kalman also hit two homers to account for three RBI. Ewers now leads the team with five homers, which is one ahead of Kalman's four long balls. Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) went 3-for-6 at the dish with five RBI and three runs scored, while Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) drove in three runs with a couple of singles. Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew four walks and went 2-for-4 with two RBI out of the lead-off spot. HD Dillard (Woodstock, Ga.) added two hits with three runs scored.

Lincoln Memorial trailed 7-4 after the Hawks posted a six-spot in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Blaze Vazquez. But the Railsplitters scored 20 unanswered runs over their next five plate appearances to turn a close game into a runaway victory.

Kalman's second home run of the game - a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth - put the Railsplitters ahead for good. The Railsplitters hung up 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, which was headlined by Ewers' three-run bomb.

Ewers later hit a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh to power a five-run frame.

Shorter used 12 pitchers in the contest, with Micah Wyatt suffering the loss after allowing Kalman's go-ahead home run in the fifth inning. Patrick Sanderson went 3-for-4 to lead Shorter's 11-hit attack, while Raul Cortes went 2-for-4. Vazquez led the Hawks with four runs driven in on his eighth home run of the season.

Grant Painter (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned the win for the Railsplitters after tossing 3 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts over that span.

The Railsplitters extended their streak of consecutive games with double-digit hits to 14, as Lincoln Memorial improved to 4-0 all-time against Shorter.

Lincoln Memorial resumes its homestand on Wednesday afternoon by welcoming the Lee Flames to Lamar Hennon Field for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
