Last Time Out Â
Lincoln Memorial kept it close early, but the Tusculum Pioneers closed the first half on an 8-2 run and eventually came away with a 22-10 victory on Wednesday afternoon in Greeneville, Tenn. The Lady Railsplitters were within striking distance midway through the opening half, as
Amara Moss (Woodbridge, Va.) scored at the 18:26 mark to cut the Pioneers' lead to 7-5. But after that run, Lincoln Memorial found itself facing a 15-7 halftime deficit from which it couldn't recover. The 10 goals were, however, the second-most goals the Lady Railsplitters have scored in a SAC match, falling just three short of matching their 13-goal outburst against Catawba.
Bre'Asia James (Vero Beach, Fla.) tallied a team-leading four goals, while Moss and
Jasmin Click (Clermont, Fla.) had two goals apiece. With the loss, the Lady Railsplitters slipped to 0-13 all-time in SAC play.
Â
Turnovers Haunting Lady Railsplitters Â
Ball security continues to be an issue for Lincoln Memorial, as the Lady Railsplitters committed 25 turnovers in Wednesday's loss at Tusculum. Including last Saturday's game at Queens, LMU has combined for 53 turnovers in its last two appearances. The Lady Railsplitters have the second-most turnovers in the SAC with 220 total this season.
Â
Triple Last Season's Offensive OutputÂ
With their next goal, the Lady Railsplitters will hit the 100-goal mark for the 2016 campaign, which is nearly triple last season's total of 35. Moss has already broken the single-season goal record set by James last season (23), as the Woodbridge, Va. native has scored 25 times and added five assists. James is quickly approaching her goal total from the program's debut season, as she has accounted for 21 goals and six assists. Click has 18 goals and six assists, while
Casey Kelly (Ellenwood, Ga.) has compiled 10 goals and 12 assists, which ranks 12th in the SAC.
Â
Looking for First Home Win of 2016Â
All three of the Lady Railsplitters' wins this season have come on the road, as Lincoln Memorial is 0-3 at home with a 22-5 loss to Young Harris, a 10-9 loss to Newberry and a 19-13 defeat at the hands of Catawba. The Lady Railsplitters haven't won in Harrogate since notching the program's first-ever victory in an 8-5 win over Pikeville on March 24 of 2015.
Â
Last Meeting Against Brevard Â
The Tornados opened on a 14-0 run and never looked back in a 20-2 win over Lincoln Memorial last season in Brevard, N.C. Brevard carried a 13-0 lead into the half and add another goal to its total early in the second half before the Lady Railsplitters finally broke through at the 26:33 mark on a goal by James.
Autumn Beddington (Newburgh, Ind.) tallied the final goal of the match for Lincoln Memorial with just over 19 minutes left, while Brevard closed the match by scoring five unanswered goals.
Â
Brevard Coming Off Big Win Â
The Tornados improved to 2-3 in SAC play on Wednesday by knocking off the Newberry Wolves 16-10 in Newberry, S.C. Brevard led wire-to-wire in that contest, taking an 8-6 lead into the break before steadily pulling away in the second half. That win ended a two-game SAC losing streak, as Brevard had previously been beaten badly by league frontrunners Queens (20-4) and Lenoir-Rhyne (19-7).
Â
A Look at the Numbers Â
Brevard has been an up-and-down offensive team this season, ranking second-to-last in the SAC in scoring with 10 goals per game. But the Tornados can be dangerous because of the percentage of shots that they land on goal, as they lead the conference with an 84.9 shots on goal percentage. Brevard has struggled in draw control, ranking last in the SAC in draw controls per game with a hair over 10. The Tornados have also shown a propensity to allow high-scoring performances, as they are giving up 12.18 goals per game.
Â
Players to Watch Â
Sophomore Caitlyn Nemeth leads the South Atlantic Conference in goals with 43 and ranks second in points with 49, as she has tallied at least four goals in eight of her nine appearances this season. Nemeth is far and away the most dangerous player featured in the Brevard offense, as Shelby Klotz has 18 goals and four assists, Livia Harrienger has 16 assists, Kelly Kearnan has nine goals and four assists, and Ashlea Mann has 12 goals and an assist. Sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Arsenault has played every minute for the Tornados this season, accumulating a 12.18 goals against average while stopping 42 percent of the shots she's faced.
