HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (24-16) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Trevecca Nazarene Trojans (21-14) answered with a run in the top of the 10th to capture a 5-4 win in NCAA Division II action at Lamar Hennon Field on Wednesday.
Â
Lincoln Memorial received a solid start from
Pete Pratti (Knoxville, Tenn.) and scattered 12 hits in the contest, but left 14 runners stranded on base, including runners and first and second in the bottom of the 10th, to fall to 3-8 in its last 11 games.
Â
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) went 3 for 6 with two RBI, driving in the game-tying runs in the bottom of the ninth, while
Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) went 3 for 5 with a run scored.
Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) and
Peyton Sawyer (Knoxville, Tenn.) both finished with two hits in the game, while
Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) went 1 for 3 with three walks.
Â
Lincoln Memorial was strong on the mound against the three-time defending Great Midwest Athletic Conference (GMAC) champions. Pratti made the start for the Railsplitters, allowing just six hits and four runs over six innings of work before giving way to
Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.), who dazzled in three innings of relief. Hinson surrendered just three hits without a walk while striking out three.
Matt Mullenbach (Urbandale, Iowa) was saddled with the loss despite not allowing a hit and striking out three in an inning of relief.
Â
The Trojans scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning, as Ethan Harrison was hit by the first pitch of the game, stole second and later crossed on a wild pitch.
Â
But the Railsplitters answered, scoring a run in the second and another in the third to assume a 2-1 lead. Neiderland singled and scored on a
Joe Stucky (Knoxville, Tenn.) sacrifice fly out in the second frame, while Augustine singled and scored on a sacrifice line out from Clark in the third. Lincoln Memorial could have done significantly more damage in both of those innings, though, leaving the bases loaded in the second and two runners on in the third.
Â
With Lincoln Memorial leading 2-1, the Trojans countered by scoring three unanswered runs to assume a 4-2 lead. Micah Blount led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to tie the game. In the top of the sixth, TNU took the lead on an RBI single from Bryson Shelton before extending the cushion to 4-2 thanks to a fielding error.
Â
The score held at 4-2 in favor of the Trojans until the bottom of the ninth, when the Railsplitters rallied to send the game into extra innings. Rodriguez walked and Hinson was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Augustine, who ripped a double into the gap in right center to score both runs and tie the game at 4-4. After a walk, the Railsplitters had runners at first and second with no outs, but a fielder's choice, a strikeout and a groundout sent the game into extra innings.
Â
In the top of the 10th, the Trojans were able to conjure up a run despite not registering a hit, as Tyler Tichenor walked and stole second, advancing to third on an errant throw. He then scored the eventual winning run on a wild pitch, just barely beating Mullenbach's tag at the plate.
Â
The Railsplitters put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the 10th after Valdez and Rodriguez drew walks, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the game.
Â
Mac Barnes picked up the win for the Trojans after keeping the Railsplitters off the board in the 10th. Jesse Peters made the start for Trevecca, allowing seven hits and two earned runs over five innings of work before giving way to a steady stream of relievers.
Â
Tichenor and Clay Staton led the Trojans with two hits apiece.
Â
The Railsplitters return to South Atlantic Conference play this weekend, making the 350-mile trek to Hartsville, South Carolina for a three-game set against the Coker Cobras. Game one in that series is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m. on Friday.
