Railsplitters rack up eight doubles in 18-8 beatdown of Cavaliers

WISE, Va. -- The Railsplitters (26-18) churned out 19 hits and recorded their most doubles in a game since 2013 in an 18-8 drubbing of the Virginia-Wise Cavaliers (15-23) on Wednesday night in Wise, Virginia.

Lincoln Memorial had been in a bit of a funk offensively entering Wednesday evening's nonconference tilt with Virginia-Wise, scoring just 16 combined runs over the last five games. But the Railsplitters exceeded that mark in just one game against the Cavaliers' shaky pitching staff, uncorked their third-most hits of the season and scattered eight doubles, which is tied for the second-most in program history. Lincoln Memorial last recorded eight doubles against Alabama-Huntsville on April 10, 2013.

Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.) and Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) led the Railsplitters' offensive onslaught with four hits apiece. Clark went 4 for 6 with four RBI, a home run and two runs scored, while Augustine went 4 for 5 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) went 3 for 5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI, while Joe Stucky (Powell, Tenn.) finished 3 for 6 with two doubles and an RBI. Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) notched two doubles and drove in three runs.

The Railsplitters took an early 2-0 lead after Rodriguez doubled in a run and Wes Neiderland (Thompson Station, Tenn.) drove in another with a fielder's choice in the top of the first, but Lincoln Memorial committed three errors in the bottom half of that inning to allow the Cavaliers to hang up five runs and take the lead. Matt Wright had the big hit of that inning for Wise with a two-run single.

Lincoln Memorial fought back to tie the game in the top of the second inning, scoring runs on a pair of fielder's choice and a miscue by the Virginia-Wise shortstop. But the Cavaliers regained the lead once again in the bottom of that inning, as Marcus Elmore was hit by a pitch and later scored on an RBI groundout.

The Railsplitters took the lead for good in the visitor's half of the third, though, using five hits and a pair of errors to score five runs. A fielding error kick-started that rally, putting Neiderland on base in front of Clark, who smashed a 2-0 pitch over the right field wall to make it a 7-6 lead for the Railsplitters. Stucky, Rodriguez and Augustine added run-scoring hits in the inning.

The Cavaliers scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to trim LMU's lead to 10-8, but the Railsplitters ended the game on an 8-0 run, tallying five runs again in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

Three walks and a hit-by-pitch allowed LMU's first four batter to reach in the top of the seventh, while Clark and Ewers drove in runs with a single and a double, respectively. Seth Hunt (Knoxville, Tenn.) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the final run across in that inning.

Neiderland, Clark and Ewers each drove in runs to highlight the Railsplitters' three-run eighth inning.

Southpaw Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.) picked up the win for the Railsplitters with an inning of relief work that included two hits allowed, four walks and a pair of strikeouts, moving to 1-0 on the season. Hinson came on in relief of Pete Pratti (Knoxville, Tenn.), who allowed three hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts in his four-inning start. Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.) and Matt Mullenbach (Urbandale, Iowa) combined to allow just one hit without a run over the final three innings.

Justin Leary was saddled with the loss for the Cavaliers after serving up four hits and four earned run while just recording a single out. Ty Lighton and Cody Jewell powered Virginia-Wise's eight-hit attack with two hits apiece.

The Railsplitters return to Lamar Hennon Field for the final weekend series of the 2016 season, as they welcome Brevard to Harrogate for a three-game South Atlantic Conference set. Weather permitting, game one of that series will get underway at 4 p.m. on Friday.
