MARS HILL, N.C. -- Samantha Smith (Knoxville, Tenn.) spun back-to-back complete-game shutouts,
Jennifer Moose (Statesville, N.C.) homered twice and head coach
Natalie Layden picked up her 100th career victory as the Lady Railsplitters (21-26, 9-11 SAC) swept a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Mars Hill (15-26, 6-14 SAC) on Wednesday.
Â
Lincoln Memorial won a pitcher's duel in game one by a final of 1-0 before uncorking three home runs in a 5-0 win in game two to complete the sweep. With the sweep, the Lady Railsplitters secured their spot in the South Atlantic Conference Championship field and moved into a three-way tie for sixth place in the standings.
Â
The Lady Railsplitters wrap up the regular season and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, when they welcome the Newberry Wolves to Dorothy Neely Field for a SAC twinbill starting at 2 p.m.
Â
Game One: Lincoln Memorial 1, Mars Hill 0
Â
The Lady Railsplitters rallied behind a terrific start from senior right-hander Smith to snap a streak of five consecutive losses in the first game of a doubleheader, helping Layden nab the 100th win of her four-year tenure at Lincoln Memorial.
Â
Smith went the distance in the circle for the Lady Railsplitters, allowing just six hits while striking out three and walking one over seven innings of work to draw her record back even for the season.
Â
Smith had to be at her best for the Lady Railsplitters to squeak by the Lions, as Mars Hill starter Shelby Culler nearly matched her step-for-step, surrendering only six hits and one earned run with two strikes in the hard-luck loss.
Â
Neither team recorded an extra-base hit in the game, as Lincoln Memorial and Mars Hill combined for 12 singles.
Meredith Johnson (Kenly, N.C.) drove in the lone run in the contest while going 1 for 2 at the plate, while
Lindsay Cecil (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Moose,
BriAnna Schrimpf (Chandler, Ariz.),
Becca Burchette (Gas City, Ind.) and
Ashlea Hunter (Woodruff, S.C.) also chipped in hits for the Lady Railsplitters.
Â
Erin Vickery paced the Lions by going 2 for 3.
Â
Smith and Culler breezed through the first three innings and traded zeroes until the Lady Railsplitters scrounged up the only run of the contest in the top of the fourth. Moose sparked that run-scoring frame by leading off with a single to centerfield before advancing all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Allie Jones (Ooltewah, Tenn.). Johnson then drove home Moose with a groundout to the Mars Hill third baseman.
Â
Smith didn't deal with too many stressful innings in her stellar start, but did have to wiggle out of trouble in the bottom of the fourth and then again in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
With one out in the fourth, Taylor Lail drew a walk and Vickery singled to put two runners on. However, Smith induced a fielder's choice and a foul out to keep the Lady Railsplitters on top.
Â
In Mars Hill's final plate appearance, Jamie Booze led off by being hit by a pitch, while Casey Stanek singled two batters later to put runners on the corners with one out. Smith bore down, though, forcing Culler into a groundout and Ellen Tillman to line out to tidy up her complete game.
Â
The game-one victory was Lincoln Memorial's first since sweeping a twinbill from Tusculum on March 29.
Â
Game Two: Lincoln Memorial 5, Mars Hill 0
Â
Smith (10-9) nearly matched her game-one performance in Wednesday's finale, spinning another complete-game shutout while allowing just six hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Â
This time around, the Lady Railsplitters' offensive provided significantly more support, scattering nine hits, including three home runs.
Â
Moose carried the torch for Lincoln Memorial, going 4 for 4 with a pair of home runs, a double, three RBI and three runs scored. It marked Moose's fourth multi-hit game in her last five appearances, as the Statesville, North Carolina native lifted her average to .366. Jones also hit a home run while also drawing a walk. Johnson, Schrimpf, Smith and
Kristen McAndrew (Belmont, N.C.) also added singles for the Lady Railsplitters.
Â
Lacee Hunsucker suffered the loss for the Lions, serving up five hits and two earned runs over 2 1/3 innings. The Lady Railsplitters also roughed up reliever Stanek, who allowed four hits and three earned runs over 3 1/3 innings.
Â
Ragan Broome (3 for 3) and Tillman (2 for 3) accounted for five of Mars Hill's six hits in the contest.
Â
After the first two innings passed without consequence, the Lady Railsplitters broke out the big bats in the top of the third, as Moose and Jones homered in back-to-back at-bats to push Lincoln Memorial out to a 2-0 lead.
Â
The lead held at 2-0 until the top of the fifth, when Moose led off with a double and scored on a single from Johnson.
Â
Moose was back at it again in the top of the sixth, increasing LMU's lead to 5-0 on a two-run home run, which scored Cecil, who sparked the inning by drawing a two-out walk.
Â
Smith got in a bit of a jam in the bottom of the seventh, as Booze walked and Tillman doubled to put two runners on with one out. But the Knoxville, Tennessee native induced back-to-back pop outs to end the game.
Â
With her two home runs, Moose drove her season total to nine, which ranks fourth in the South Atlantic Conference. That is the most home runs in a single season for an LMU player since
Amanda Snow hit 12 in 2013. Â
