Railsplitters win second straight SAC match, defeat Brevard 12-6

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Railsplitters (6-3, 2-3 SAC) opened on a 7-0 run and never looked back in a 12-6 win over the Brevard Tornados (1-10, 0-5 SAC) in South Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon in Harrogate, Tenn.

After ending an 11-game SAC losing streak on Wednesday night at Tusculum, Lincoln Memorial picked up its second consecutive wire-to-wire league victory by jumping on the free-falling Tornados early and keeping the throttle hammered down throughout.

Adam Golia (Victoria, British Columbia) paced the Railsplitters with four goals and an assist on 13 shots and seven shots on goal. In the process, Golia drove his season goal total to 31, becoming the first player in program history to surpass the 30-goal plateau. He also becomes just the third player in the SAC to reach that mark this season.

Kyle Arcuri (Patchogue, N.Y.) collected a goal and three assists, while Billy Kopsky (Smithtown, N.Y.) contributed two goals and two assists. On his only two shot attempts of the match, Tylor Justin (Buffalo, N.Y.) tallied two goals, while Justin Stewart (Copiague, N.Y.) had a goal and an assist.

Junior goalkeeper Joe Medel (Virginia Beach, Va.) dazzled in nearly 60 minutes of work for the Railsplitters, allowing just five goals and making 13 saves before giving way to Colin Parrington (Middletown, N.Y.) in the closing minutes of the fourth. Medel improves to 6-3 on the season with the win.

Kyle Hunziker accounted for half of the Tornados' offensive output, scoring three goals on 11 shots and six shots on goal. Ryan Taylor chipped in two goals and an assist for Brevard, which lost its fourth straight match to remain winless in SAC play.

The Railsplitters absolutely dominated the first half, building an 8-1 lead while holding Brevard scoreless for more than the first 20 minutes.

Lincoln Memorial shut out the Tornados in the first quarter, assuming a 4-0 lead after goals from Golia, Kopsky, Justin and Reggie Golfin (Detroit, Mich.). Arcuri assisted on two of those first-quarter goals.

Stewart kept the Railsplitters' early surge going with a goal at the 10-minute mark of the second quarter, while Justin scored a little less than three minutes later to make it a 6-0 lead. Nick Boriello (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) capped Lincoln Memorial's impressive 7-0 start with a goal at the 5:56 mark of the second quarter, which was assisted by Golia.

Brevard finally broke through against the Railsplitters' stingy defense at the 4:24 mark of the second on an unassisted goal by Taylor, but Kospky slung one in from the right wing a little over a minute later to send Lincoln Memorial into the break with a commanding 8-1 cushion.

The Railsplitters scored first in the second half on a goal by Golia at the 12:37 mark, but Brevard would regain some momentum before that quarter came to a close, as Hunziker scored two quick goals to close the deficit to 9-3 with 11 minutes left in the period. After another Golia goal, Hewitt Farr scored for Brevard at the 5:19 mark to pull the Tornados within six at 10-4, which is where the score would stand at the end of three.

The Tornados closed the gap to five with another goal from Hunziker at the 12:19 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Railsplitters gave themselves some breathing room on goals from Arcuri (9:13) and Golia (8:58). That would be more than enough for Lincoln Memorial to hang on for the victory, as Brevard wouldn't score again until Taylor found the back of the net with 37 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Railsplitters outshot the Tornados 44-33 and went 19 for 23 on clears. Lincoln Memorial also accounted for a 33-31 edge in groundball recoveries, but Brevard got the better of the face-off battle, winning 12 of the match's 22 face-offs.

The Railsplitters are back in action on Saturday, April 9, when they hosts the Mars Hill Lions for a SAC tilt at 2 p.m. on the LMU Soccer Complex.
