Lady Railsplitters win sixth straight with straight-sets sweep at Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. -- The Lady Railsplitters extended their winning streak to six and remained unbeaten in South Atlantic Conference play with an easy breezy, straight-sets win (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) over the Newberry Wolves on Friday night inside of Eleazer Arena.

Lincoln Memorial (6-1, 3-0 SAC) continued to rock and roll offensively while taking advantage of a boatload of mistakes by the Wolves (3-7, 0-2 SAC) to notch just the second winning streak of at least six games for the program since the start of the 2013 campaign.

The Lady Railsplitters were ultra-efficient once again, racking up 35 kills with only nine errors for a .241 attack percentage, hitting above the .200 clip for the sixth straight match. In addition to that, Lincoln Memorial collected 14 block assists and two solo blocks, which all added up to a stellar defensive effort that saw the visitors allow a mere .092 attack percentage. The Wolves had a smorgasbord of errors in the contest to aid Lincoln Memorial's effort, finishing with 28 attack miscues, seven service errors, three reception errors and two ball-handling blunders.

Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.), Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) and Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) led the Lady Railsplitters' attack. Holland - fresh off back-to-back 20-kill performances - had a match-leading 13 kills on a .333 clip to go along with eight digs. Brock notched eight kills without an error and a match-best 17 digs. Cash was also error-less in the match while producing eight kills, two assists and five digs. Tone Gill (Nashville, Tenn.) chipped in three kills with a match-high four block assists.

Senior setter Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio), who was selected as the HeroSports.com D2 Hero of the Week earlier in the day, racked up 29 assists and 11 digs to account for her sixth double-double of the season. Bristol Snider (Chattanooga, Tenn.) added 11 digs.

The Lady Railsplitters led the opening set wire-to-wire, but the Wolves overcame a plethora of errors to make things interesting late. Lincoln Memorial won the first five points via three kills and an attack error, forcing the Wolves to burn an early timeout. After the timeout, Newberry whittled away at the lead and closed the gap to 8-7 on a kill from Logan Hayward. The next passage of play was controlled by the Lady Railsplitters, though, as they won five of the next seven rallies and took a 13-9 lead on a ball-handling error. The Wolves pulled back within two at 14-12 on back-to-back kills, but the Lady Railsplitters spun off a 7-1 flurry, highlighted by kills from Holland and Gill, to take a 21-13 lead. A late 5-0 Newberry run trimmed the final deficit significantly, but Brock capped the 25-20 win with a kill.

A kill from Heyward, a service ace and a kill by Sidra Triplett put the Wolves ahead 5-4 early in the second frame, but Newberry committed three consecutive attack errors after that to push the Lady Railsplitters back in front. Lincoln Memorial continued to lead as the set cruised along, but was unable to assume a lead larger than two points. Eventually, the Wolves used a pair of LMU attack errors to take a 19-18 lead. The Lady Railsplitters wouldn't let the set get away, though, as they broke a 22-22 stalemate with a kill from Holland, a Newberry attack error and a kill from Brock to clinch the 25-22 victory.

The early portion of the third set saw the two teams jockey back and forth for position. The Lady Railsplitters led 6-2 early, but watched as the Wolves gained some momentum and took an 11-9 lead on a kill from Madison Hargraves. It was then the Lady Railsplitters' turn to swing the momentum, as they won six of the next eight rallies to take a 15-13 lead on a kill from Sam Cash. Newberry answered and took the lead briefly with a 4-1 run, but Lincoln Memorial ended the set with a 9-1 spurt, completing the straight-sets sweep with a 25-18 triumph.

Heyward was the lone Newberry hitter with more than seven kills in the match, as she produced 10 to go along with 13 digs. Triplett had seven kills, while three other Wolves had six kills apiece. Maggie Marsh led Newberry with 19 assists, while Kensley Jordan had a team-best 14 digs.

With the win, the Lady Railsplitters improve to 17-7 in the all-time series and 8-3 on the road. Lincoln Memorial is now 3-0 in SAC play for the first time since the start of the 2014 campaign. The last time the Lady Railsplitters started 3-0 in SAC play prior to that was 2009.

The Lady Railsplitters will look to secure their first seven-game winning streak since 2011 on Saturday afternoon, when they pay a visit to the Anderson Trojans for a SAC tilt beginning at 2 p.m.
