CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Queens Royals scored three times in the second half to hand the Lady Railsplitters a 3-1 loss in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C.
Lincoln Memorial (1-4, 1-1 SAC) kept the Royals (3-3, 1-1 SAC) out of the net in the first half, but allowed three second-half goals to drop back even in SAC play. Junior striker
Melissa Carpenter (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored her first goal of the season for the Lady Railsplitters in the second half, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the potent Queens attack.
The Royals outshot the Lady Railsplitters 25-3 in the match, which was one-sided on the offensive end of the field from the start. Ten of Queens' 25 shots landed on frame, while only two of Lincoln Memorial's three shots hit their mark. Queens also mustered a 9-0 edge in corner-kick attempts, which provided a distinct advantage for the Royals in the attacking third.
Queens had the Lady Railsplitters on their heels from the get go, registering four shots within the first 10 minutes of action. LMU sophomore netminder
Brooke Taylor (White Pine, Tenn.) stood up to that pressure, though, keeping all four of those shots, and the six additional shots Queens would produce in the half, from going for goals.
Lincoln Memorial's first shot came more than 25 minutes into the first half on an attempt from sophomore midfielder
Isa Jara (Miami, Fla.). All told, Queens outshot the Lady Railsplitters 10-2 in the half, but Taylor and Queens goalkeeper Rachel Quest combined to keep the score level at the break.
After a quite start, the fireworks began in the second half as the two teams combined for four goals.
After an LMU handball occurred in the box in the 49th minute, the Royals broke the scoreless stalemate, as forward Thea Mallett converted the penalty-kick attempt to put Queens in front 1-0. The Lady Railsplitters answered in the 61st minute, however, as Carpenter snuck in behind Quest and tallied the equalizer to draw the match back even at 1-1.
The match would be tied for only a short time, though, as Ashley Osiecki (62') and Jasmin Singh (65') converted goals just over three minutes apart to give the Royals a commanding 3-1 lead. That proved to be more than enough for Queens, as Carpenter's goal was the last shot attempt of the match for the Lady Railsplitters.
Rachel Quest played the entire 90 minutes in goal for Queens, making one save and giving up one goal in her sixth start of the year. Taylor made three saves and gave up all three of the Royals' goals over 70 minutes before being replaced by senior
Kathryn Lundy (Pinckney, Mich.) in the second half. Lundy played the final 20 minutes and made four saves over that span.
The road loss is the fifth straight for the Lady Railsplitters away from the LMU Soccer Complex dating back to October of last year, when they defeated Coker 4-1 on the road. It also marks Lincoln Memorial's first-ever against the Royals, as the two teams have tied in each of the last two seasons, while Lincoln Memorial emerged victorious in the first meeting in 2013.
In-state rivals Tusculum is next on the docket for the Lady Railsplitters, as the Pioneers come to Harrogate and the LMU Soccer Complex on Wednesday, September 21st for 1 p.m. kickoff. Live stats and video links will be available on Twitter (@LMURailsplitter) and online at www.LMURailsplitters.com.
