Brock and Cash lead Lady Railsplitters to 3-1 win over Catawba

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Liz Brock (Lima, Ohio) and Samantha Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) combined for 37 kills to power the Lady Railsplitters to a four-set win (25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 28-26) over the Catawba Indians in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Friday night inside of Mary Mars Gymnasium.

Lincoln Memorial (10-2, 7-1 SAC) faced set point in both the third and fourth frames, but rallied in each of those sets to defeat Catawba (5-8, 3-5 SAC) for the 10th time in the last 11 tries. The Lady Railsplitters also continued the program's best start since the 2011 team opened by winning 11 of its first 13 matches.

Brock produced a match- and career-high 19 kills on a .245 attack percentage while adding 12 digs, while Sam Cash matched a season-high mark with 18 kills on a sizzling .459 attack percentage. All told, that duo combined for 37 of the Lady Railsplitters' 57 kills. Kiera Holland (Columbia, S.C.) chipped in 11 kills, eight digs and four block assists, while Tone Gill (Nashville, Tenn.) had four kills and three blocks.

Senior Abby Cash (New Carlisle, Ohio) recorded another double-double with 42 assists and 17 digs. Erica Whiteaker (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) paced the Lady Railsplitters with 19 digs.

The Lady Railsplitters were able to ward off Catawba despite hitting just .180 in the contest while committing a season-high 27 attack errors. The Indians were much cleaner in the attack with 56 kills and a .216 attack percentage, but had six service errors and seven ball-handling miscues to offset that disparity.

Lincoln Memorial raced out to an 8-4 lead in the opening set after a kill from Holland, and later increased its lead to 14-8 on a block by Holland and Gill. The next passage of play would see the Indians chip away at the lead, pulling to within two at 20-18 on a kill from Rachel Stanford. But a kill from Sam Cash followed by a ball-handling error made it 22-18 in favor of the Lady Railsplitters. Allison Benton's attack found the floor and made it 24-23 late in the set, but a kill from Block clinched LMU's 25-23 win.

The Lady Railsplitters led throughout the early portion of the second, but a 4-0 flurry gave the Indians a 10-7 lead. Later in the set, Lincoln Memorial would find itself trailing 16-13, but used a 4-0 run of its own to take a 17-16 lead on an ace from Whiteaker. From there, the two teams traded 3-0 runs, which put the Lady Railsplitters ahead 20-19 on a Catawba attack error. However, the Indians won five of the next six points to assume a 24-21 edge on a kill from Bri Howard. Two rallies later, Alex Hopper clinched the 25-22 Catawba win with a kill.

The back-and-forth third set provided ample drama for the 600 Mary Mars Gym faithful in attendance. The Lady Railsplitters opened up a 10-6 lead, but watched as Catawba spun off a 6-0 run to take a 12-10 lead on an attack error. Lincoln Memorial followed the up with a 6-2 run, taking a 16-14 lead on a Catawba attack error. The Lady Railsplitters were clinging to a 20-18 lead late in the frame before the Indians won five of the next six rallies to assume a 23-21 lead. An LMU attack error later made it 24-23 in favor of Catawba. However, an Indian attack error and kills from Brock and Sam Cash comprised a 3-0 run, which finished off the stunning 26-24 win for the Lady Railsplitters.

The Lady Railsplitters and Indians traded big runs early in the fourth set, with Lincoln Memorial pulling ahead 12-8 on an attack error. Sam Cash kept the Lady Railsplitters ahead by four (18-14) with a kill, but the Indians fought all the way back to tie the set at 21-21 on a kill from Kimberly Hurtado. The Lady Railsplitters later forced match point at 24-22 on a Alex Hopper attack error, but the Indians used kills from Howard and Hopper to take a 25-24 lead. From there, the Lady Railsplitters swung the momentum and made it 26-25 to force match point again, but a Howard kill tied it back up at 26-26. However, a kill from Sam Cash and a Catawba attack error ended the 28-26 win for LMU, dusting off the four-set win.

Audrey Hoffman led the Indians with 14 kills on a .375 attack percentage, while Allison Benton picked up 12 kills and 14 digs. Alex Hopper chipped in 10 kills and four block assists. Bri Howard added eight kills and a match-high five block assists. Rachel Stanford had 50 assists and 13 digs, while Meredith Furr led all players with 25 digs.
