Railsplitters take down Tusculum 90-68

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. -- Cornelius Taylor (Claxton, Ga.) scored a career-high 18 points while Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.) finished two rebounds shy of a triple-double as the Railsplitters (13-4, 8-3 SAC) pounded the Tusculum Pioneers (7-9, 4-7 SAC) 90-68 in South Atlantic Conference men's hoops action on Wednesday night in Greeneville, Tenn.

Six players hit double figures for Lincoln Memorial, who was nearly flawless in building a 22-point halftime lead to power their 19th straight win over the Pioneers dating back to January 2010.

"It was a good team win against a quality conference opponent," LMU head men's basketball coach Josh Schertz said. "I think it's glaring that we need to become a more consistent team in terms of our competitiveness and execution. As a group we do a horrible job of handling prosperity. We haven't shown the ability to keep our foot on the gas pedal to this point. That will come back to bite us if we don't get it corrected."

Taylor scored 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including a 4-for-8 mark from three-point range, to surpass his previous career-high of 15 points. Pinson had 15 points, matched a career-high mark with 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds, falling just two boards shy of becoming the first player in program history to record a triple-double. The Greenville, S.C. native also notched four steals without a turnover over 36 minutes of work.

Chris Perry (Bartow, Fla.) also scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. Hunter Spaw (Bean Station, Tenn.) compiled 17 points and went 5-of-9 from three-point range in 18 minutes off the bench, while Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) scored 12 and Trevon Shaw (St. Helena Island, S.C.) notched 11. Choice and Shaw also combined for 15 rebounds and five assists.

The Railsplitters accounted for a 36-point difference from behind the arc, as Lincoln Memorial shot 47.8 percent in the game and drained 14 three-pointers on a 43.8 percent mark. Tusculum, by contrast, shot 39 percent from the field and finished just 2-of-16 from the arc. The Pioneers scored 26 of their 68 points at the free-throw line.

The Railsplitters dominated nearly every aspect of the game in the first half. Lincoln Memorial shot 57 percent and went 8-of-14 from three-point range while holding the Pioneers to 30.4 percent shooting, including a dreadful 1-of-11 mark from three, through the first 20 minutes. All of that resulted in the Railsplitters establishing a commanding 22-point halftime lead, and the only reason it wasn't more lopsided than that was because of Tusculum's 13-for-16 effort at the free-throw line.

The Pioneers kept it close early and cut the Railsplitters' lead to 12-8 on a free throw from Zach Davis at the 12:24 mark, but Lincoln Memorial pulled away after that with a 10-0 run. Choice ended that spurt with a three-pointer to make it 22-8 with a little over nine minutes left in the half.

The Railsplitters would steadily increase their lead as the half drew to a close. A three-ball from Spaw at 4:45 pushed the lead to 35-19, while a bucket from Shaw on the next possession made it an 18-point advantage. Lincoln Memorial ended the half on a 7-1 run to take a 50-28 lead into the break, a stretch that was capped by a steal and basket from Spaw, who scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half.

Tusculum made a little run early in the second half and cut the Railsplitters' lead to 56-40 on a jumper from Cory Fagan at the 15:11 mark. That would be as close as the Pioneers would get, though, as back-to-back threes from Taylor extended the lead to 65-43 less than three minutes later.

An 8-2 LMU run later in the half widened the gap even further and put the Railsplitters ahead 78-50 with 7:39 left on free throws from Pinson and Shaw. At the 4:44 mark, Lincoln Memorial's lead finally hit 30 at 86-56 on a bucket by Pinson. The Railsplitters continued to lead by 30 late in regulation, but, after both benches were clear, the Pioneers closed on an 8-0 run to trim the final deficit to 90-68.

Fagan led the Pioneers with a game-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Kendall Patterson had 13 points, but went just 1-of-8 from the field and tallied 11 of his 13 at the charity stripe. Chase Mounce had 10 points in 21 minutes of work, while no other Tusculum player had more than eight.
