Notes on the Railsplitters:
-After picking up the first win in program history on January 14 at Mary Mars Gymnasium, the Railsplitters went 0-3 this past weekend in Springfield, Ohio, losing in straight sets to Wittenberg and Mount St. Joseph while suffering a 3-1 loss to Cincinnati Christian.
Â
-Offensive woes proved to be Lincoln Memorial's downfall this past weekend, as the Railsplitters had 18 attack errors and hit .035 against Wittenberg, committed a season-high 27 miscues and hit .167 against Cincinnati Christian and piled up 23 attack errors on a .093 hitting percentage against Mount St. Joseph. The Railsplitters have hit above .200 just one time this season, posting a .242 clip in the win over Alderson Broaddus.
Â
-Freshman opposite
Evan Cory (Metairie, La.) has led the Railsplitters in kills in every match this season and reached double figures in four of his six appearances. However, Cory has also committed at least five errors in all but one match this season. Graduate student
Marcus Molina (Newport Beach, Calif.) had a strong Saturday showing for the Railsplitters in Springfield, producing a season-high 10 kills against Cincinnati Christian with seven kills against Mount St. Joseph.
Â
-The young Railsplitters need to improve defensively in order to get things rolling in the right direction. Opponents have averaged 11.7 kills per set and hit .249 against Lincoln Memorial this season. On the other end of the spectrum, the Railsplitters are posting 10.1 kills per set on a .146 clip.
Â
-Lincoln Memorial has also struggled in service. The Railsplitters are averaging an ace per set, but have also racked up 82 service errors through just six matches. Lincoln Memorial had 16 errors in that loss to Cincinnati Christian alone.
Â
-Following Tuesday's trip to Bluefield, the Railsplitters return to Mary Mars Gymnasium this weekend to host Lees-McRae on Friday and Bryan on Saturday. Lincoln Memorial will be looking to avenge a 3-0 loss at Lees-McRae from back on January 13.
Â
Notes on Bluefield:
-Tuesday serves as the 2017 season opener for the Bluefield Rams, who will be looking to improve upon a 6-15 mark in 2016. The Rams did make a three-win improvement from a 3-20 record in 2015 to last season.
Â
-The Rams' thin roster consists of just 10 players without much experience. Bluefield is led into the 2017 campaign with a roster featuring two seniors, one junior, four sophomores and two freshmen.
Â
-The Rams are mentored by second-year head coach Charles "Buddy" Gallemore, who went 6-15 in his first season at the helm for Bluefield.
Â
-Bluefield is an NAIA member institution located in Bluefield, Va. Tuesday will be the first of two meetings between Lincoln Memorial and Bluefield, as the Rams will return the favor with a trip to Harrogate on February 28.Â
