Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

#6/10 Lady Railsplitters outlast Queens 70-60 to improve to 13-0 on the season

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It wasn't easy, but the #6/10 Lincoln Memorial University women's basketball team picked up their 13th win of the season as they outlasted a stubborn Queens team 70-60 Monday evening. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but was moved to Monday due to the recent snows in both the Harrogate and Charlotte areas.

With the win, LMU improves to 13-0 on the season and 8-0 in the South Atlantic Conference. This is the first time in program history that a LMU team has gone 13-0 in a season. The Lady Railsplitters are currently ranked 10th in the WBCA/USA Today Coaches' Poll and 6th in the D2SIDA Media Poll. They are also the top team in the D2SIDA Regional Media Poll released earlier today as they have 60 points and all six first place votes.

Shea Coker (Knoxville, Tenn.) led LMU with 24 points, one shy of tying her career high. She went 8-10 from the field, 4-5 from three-point range and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe. Megan Pittman (Liberty, Ky.) notched her fifth double-double of the season as she had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Ross Mathis (Greer, S.C.) added in 14 points, including 4 three-pointers.

The loss spoiled a career-high performance from Queens' McKell Oliverio as she had a game-high 26 points. Mendy McNeese added in 14 points.

For the game, the Blue and Gray shot 39.3% from the field, 42.9% from three-point range and 81.3% from the free throw line. Queens shot 43.1% from the field, 46.2% from behind the arc and a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe. Defense carried the day for LMU as they not only out-rebounded Queens 35-32 but had 21 second chance points to QU's seven and also had 16 points off of turnovers to six by the Royals.

The game featured eight ties and six lead changes. A Coker trey gave LMU the early 3-0 lead, but Queens then scored seven unanswered points. Queens would take the lead two more times in the quarter, only to see LMU tie it up. A McNeese three-pointer with 19 seconds remaining would put the home team ahead after the first frame, 17-14.

Queens would come out in the second quarter and take a 23-17 lead only to go ice cold from the field for the rest of the quarter. LMU would take advantage and go on a 13-2 run to close out the half and take a 30-25 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Railsplitters would come out in the third quarter and go out to the 34-25 lead with 8:05 left in the period. The teams traded baskets for the next several minutes but Queens could not get any closer than 44-43 with 1:30 remaining. A lay-up by Pittman and a trey by Mathis extended the lead back to 49-46 heading into the final stanza.

Four LMU free throws early in the fourth quarter would give them an eight point cushion, only for the Royals to go on a 8-0 run and tie the game at 54-54 with 6:12 left. Queens would eventually take the 58-56 lead with 3:55 remaining. A Coker three-pointer then sparked an 8-2 run to give LMU the lead for good. The Lady Railsplitters would hit their free throws down the stretch to earn the 70-60 win.

LMU will now have less than 48 hours to prepare for their toughest test as they make the short trip from Charlotte to Anderson, South Carolina to face the defending SAC champion Anderson University Trojans on Wednesday. Anderson is currently tied for second place in the SAC with Catawba as each has a 7-1 conference record. The Lady Railsplitters will host Catawba on Saturday.
