Men's Tennis

LMU tennis teams have successful weekend at the ITA Southeast Regional

SUMTER. S.C. -- Several members of the men's and women's tennis teams competed in the ITA Southeast Regional, held Friday-Monday at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, South Carolina. LMU had a good weekend as Joshua Peress won the group A consolation bracket championship and the duo of Peress and David Segarra won the group B tournament crown in men's doubles, while Julia Valls finished as the runner up in the group A consolation bracket.

On the men's side in group A play, Xavier Marti defeated Southern Wesleyan's Urs Widow 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round and then fell to Columbus State's Kiranpal Pannu 6-2, 6-3 in the round of 32. Mount Olive's Armando Ferreira defeated Joshua Peress 6-2, 6-2 in the opening round, sending him to the consolation bracket. In that bracket, Peress defeated Tusculum's Tashique Kader 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the first round and then received a bye into the quarterfinal round, where he faced SWU's Widow and won 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals. He then received a pair of byes due to other teams not playing due to time constraints and therefore won the Group A Consolation Bracket.

In group B play, Constantin Ernstberger and Segarra both advanced to the quartfinal round. Ernstberger won over Young Harris' Ignacio Ascarrunz 7-6 (1), 6-4; King's Arturo Alfaro 6-3, 6-4; and Belmont Abbey's Carlos Nolasco 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2 before falling to Newberry's Nikhil Mannepalli 6-3, 6-3. David Segarra pick up wins over YHC's Max Muldoon (6-1, 6-0), CSU's John Wesley Carlson (6-2, 6-3) and USC Aiken's Vakentin Mountono (6-4, 6-4) before losing to North Georgia's George
Waldo 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles action Ernstberger and Marti fell to Lander's Gronje and Groner 8-2 in the opening round of group A play. In group B, Peress and Segarra received a first round by before winning over Emmanuel's Canadas and Pereira (8-2), Tusculum's de Klerk and Munoz (8-7 (4)) and Lander's Korsten and Regner (8-4) to reach Monday's group B championship. In that match, they defeated Mount Olive's Ferreira and Middleton to win the tournament group B doubles crown.

In Women's group A action, Marta Pinol picked up three wins, defeating Georgia College's Valeria Lopez 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, Lenoir-Rhyne's Sara Kalkenova 6-4, 6-0 and Francis Marion's Marie Krueger 1-6, 6-1, ret. before falling in the group quarterfinal to Tusculum's Katarina Majorova 6-2, 6-4. In other group A action, Julia Loos fell to Tusculum's Annie McCullough 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 in the opening round and then lost to L-R's Marta Escanero 7-5, 6-3 in the consolation bracket.

Women's group B play saw Angelica Solano defeat Emmanuel's Katharina Kiderlen 6-0, 6-2 in the round of 64 before falling to Young Harris' Ana Rodriguez 6-4, 6-2. Mount Olive's Areej Fareh won over Julia Valls 7-6 (2), 6-4, forcing Valls into the consolation bracket. In that bracket, Valls had a pair of byes before beating FMU's Nikita Berger 7-5, 6-1 and Coker's Suzanna Mickey 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the consolation semifinals. Valls then advanced to the finals following a walkover, where she fell to Tusculum's Brooks 3-6, 6-4 ,10-8.

In doubles action, Pinol and Loos won over Mount Olive's Fareh and Gardner 8-2 before falling to Georgia College's Kelly and Lopez 8-6 in group A play. In group B, Solano and Valls advanced to the second round via a bye before falling to Columbus State's Kattah Paz and Williams 8-1.

The LMU women will face UVa-Wise Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Wise, Va. The match was originially scheduled for Monday but was moved due to LMU still playing in the ITA Regional on Monday. The Cavaliers are currently 3-7 on the year, with all three wins coming in Mountain East Conference play, where they are 3-4.

The LMU men, barring any matches added in the next few weeks, have now completed the fall portion of their schedule. They will resume action in February, beginning on Feb. 3 when they host the University of the Cumberlands.
