HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Lady Railsplitters (11-10, 6-7 SAC) picked up their second straight-set sweep in as many days and won its third consecutive South Atlantic Conference match with a 25-15, 25-14, 25-9 win over the Newberry Wolves (8-13, 4-10 SAC) on Saturday afternoon at Mary Mars Gym.
Much like Friday's win over Coker, Lincoln Memorial was carried to victory by a stifling defensive effort, as the Lady Railsplitters combined for 10 blocks and held the visitors to a dismal .010 attack percentage. On the other side of the net, Lincoln Memorial hit .247, including a .500 effort in the clinching set.
Rylee Storms led the Lady Railsplitters with nine kills on a sizzling .529 attack percentage while adding four blocks.
Kiera Holland posted eight kills and two blocks, while
Lindsey Nartker produced six kills, four aces and nine digs.
Alicia Kessler had five kills and three blocks.
Tone Gill led the team with six blocks.
Olivia Brock recorded a team-high 16 assists, while
Erica Whiteaker led all players with 19 digs.
Newberry didn't have a player finish with more than five kills in the match and also failed to record a hitting percentage above .115 in any of the three sets. Zoe Dinkins put up five kills, while Alexis Bryant and Sidra Triplett had four apiece. Taylor Garrison contributed 17 assists and also led the team with eight digs.
It was an ugly first set during which neither team hit over .100, but Newberry had significantly more trouble than the Lady Railsplitters, finishing with nine attack errors and four service errors. Lincoln Memorial led wire-to-wire, but hit just .034 and committed six attack errors in the frame. The Lady Railsplitters held a 16-14 edge after a 4-0 Newberry run. However, the home team ripped off seven unanswered points courtesy of five Wolves attack errors to build a commanding 23-14 lead. Newberry's ninth attack error clinched the 25-15 win for LMU.
The Lady Railsplitters rode a defense that combined for six blocks and held the Wolves to a .000 attack percentage to another convincing victory in set two. The two teams were tied at 9-9 until Lincoln Memorial went on an 8-0 spurt powered by three team blocks and two kills from Storms. That was more than enough breathing room for the Lady Railsplitters, who used back-to-back kills from Ged to take a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-14 victory.
The Lady Railsplitters kept the momentum going and buried the Wolves with yet another dominant performance in set three. The frame was knotted at 8-8 early, but Lincoln Memorial closed things out with a spectacular 17-1 run, which was highlighted by four kills from Storms, two Nartker aces and two kills from Holland.
The win avenged a 3-1 loss to Newberry in the first meeting between the two teams on September 16. It also moved Lincoln Memorial to 19-9 in the all-time series and was the first home win since 2015.
The Lady Railsplitters host the rival Carson-Newman Eagles at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night. Live stats and video will be available at www.lmurailsplitters.com.
