No. 9 Carson-Newman scores four man-up goals to take down Lady Railsplitters, 5-2

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The No. 9 Carson-Newman Eagles (9-0-1, 4-0-1 SAC) scored four man-up goals in the second half to spoil a spirited effort by the Lady Railsplitters (5-6, 0-5 SAC) in a 5-2 loss in South Atlantic Conference women's soccer action at McCown Field on Wednesday night. Lincoln Memorial tallied its first multi-goal effort in SAC play this season, but it wasn't enough to overcome that man-down disadvantage, which helped Carson-Newman notch its second-highest goal total all-time against the Lady Railsplitters.

Carson-Newman took the lead in the 21st minute when Lara Hallgrimsdottir curled in her third goal of the season off of the free kick. The Eagles had an opportunity to add to their lead in the 38th minute when the Lady Railsplitters were called for a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick. However, goalie Brooke Taylor stopped that PK attempt to keep Lincoln Memorial within striking distance.

The Lady Railsplitters then equalized the match in the 41st minute when Melissa Carpenter snuck a shot past Jacqueline Burns for her third marker of the season. The score would remain tied at 1-1 at the break despite Carson-Newman finishing with a 9-3 edge in shot attempts.

The match was then flipped on its head less than three minutes into the second half, as Carpenter was sent off the pitch with a red card to put the Lady Railsplitters at a man-down disadvantage.

After the red card, the Lady Railsplitters sunk back in formation and kept the Eagles off the board until Emilee Futrell put the home team in the lead in the 67th minute. That goal opened the floodgates, as All-American striker Lauren Wade made it a 3-1 Carson-Newman lead in the 71st minute with a left-footed strike.

The Lady Railsplitters answered back and pulled within one just 19 seconds after Wade's goal, as Courtney Boyd maneuvered through the Carson-Newman defense and got off a shot just before Burns arrived that landed in the bottom right corner of the net for her second goal of the season.

However, Futrell scored again just over a minute later to make it 4-2, while Magda Mosengo put the finishing touch on the Eagles' victory with her sixth goal of the season in the 87th minute.

Carson-Newman outshot Lincoln Memorial 19-5, including a 10-2 cushion in the second half. The Eagles also accounted for an 11-1 edge in corner kicks, as LMU didn't attempt its first corner until the 86th minute.

The Lady Railsplitters became just the third team to score multiple goals against the Eagles this season despite the loss.

Taylor finished with four saves for Lincoln Memorial, while Burns earned her ninth win of the season with three stops.

Quick Hits

- Corner kicks led directly to two of Carson-Newman's five goals. The first goal of the match came via Hallgrimsdottir's curling corner, while Mosengo's 87th-minute goal was a result of Hallgrimsdottir's corner that settled in the box.
