ANDERSON, S.C. – The Lady Railsplitters (13-13, 8-10 SAC) were unable to keep pace with the South Atlantic Conference-leading Anderson Trojans (24-3, 17-1 SAC), who extended their winning streak to 19 with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-14 victory over Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon at the Abney Center.
The Anderson attack put up 34 kills on an efficient .282 hitting percentage to sweep the regular-season series from the Lady Railsplitters and move one step closer to ending Wingate's streak of 11 consecutive SAC regular-season titles. Lincoln Memorial produced 29 kills on a respectable .149 attack percentage but couldn't overcome 36 combined attack, service, setting and reception errors.
Lindsey Nartker and
Tone Gill paced Lincoln Memorial with seven kills apiece, and Gill finished with a team-high .375 attack percentage.
Rylee Storms had four kills, while
Kiera Holland,
Danielle Ged and
Alicia Kessler had three apiece.
Olivia Brock led the team with 14 assists, while Nartker and
Erica Whiteaker had a team-best nine digs.
Rachel Burts fronted the Anderson attack with eight kills on a .438 clip. Jayln Knight pitched in seven kills and eight digs, while Serena Jackson, Kathryn Hughes and Marissa Mitter had six kills apiece. Emily Conlin led all players in both assists and digs with 29 and 10, respectively.
A potent attack that accounted for 13 kills on a .407 hitting percentage helped the Trojans march to a 25-13 victory in the opening set. The Lady Railsplitters led 4-2 after a pair of early kills by Gill, but Anderson promptly ripped off nine unanswered points to take the lead for good. Lincoln Memorial was unable to settle into a rhythm after that Trojan run and fell into a 20-9 hole late in the set. Burts completed Anderson's first-set triumph with a kill.
Neither team established a lead larger than two points in the second set until the Trojans used an 8-1 spurt to gain control. The Lady Railsplitters led 12-11 before Anderson began that run but trailed 19-13 by the time it was finished. Lincoln Memorial never trailed by less than four points from there on out, while a service error helped the Trojans capture a 25-20 victory.
Anderson continued to dominate in the third and final set, racing out to a 9-2 lead right at the start. The Trojans extended their lead to 14-5 on a kill by Mitter before the Lady Railsplitters made a brief run to cut the deficit to 15-9 on a kill from Nartker. However, a 4-1 run increased the Anderson lead to 22-10. After a 3-0 LMU run, the Trojans ended the set and the match with a kill by Knight.
The Lady Railsplitters wrap up the regular season next weekend when they host a pair of South Atlantic Conference matches, welcoming Queens to town on Friday for a 7 p.m. first serve before facing Wingate at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
