Railsplitters split twinbill with Ohio Valley

HARROGATE, Tenn. – Lincoln Memorial and Ohio Valley split their doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Lamar Hennon Field. The Railsplitters (3-8) scored six runs in the final three innings to come from behind to take the opener, while the Fighting Scots (1-5) overcame an early 2-0 deficit in the second game to win for the first time in 2017.

Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded a pair of hits in each game and finished 4-for-7 with five RBI for the afternoon.

The Railsplitters play two more games at Lamar Hennon Field Tuesday, February 21 against Kentucky State. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Game One: Lincoln Memorial 7, Ohio Valley 3

Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) doubled in the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh, and Ewers cleared the bases with another double the next inning to fuel a pair of late Railsplitter rallies. Lincoln Memorial trailed 3-1 after the top of the sixth inning but scored six runs over the final three innings to take the first game 7-3.

Dominic Morabito (Vienna, Va.) shut down the Fighting Scots over the final 3.1 innings, striking out seven. He worked out of jams in the sixth and seventh innings to keep the game close and struck out four of the final seven batters he faced to close out the game. In the process he picked up his first win of the season.

Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.) made the start and allowed three runs over 5.1 innings with eight hits and one walk allowed. Two innings ultimately did him in, as he allowed two runs on four hits in the second and another run on two hits in the sixth before making way for Morabito.

Freshman Ryan Valentine made the start for the Fighting Scots, allowing two earned runs on four hits, three walks and a hit batter in 5.1 innings. He was in line for his first career win when he departed in the sixth inning, but reliever Tyler Mondoux could not protect the team's lead.

Ohio Valley took an early 2-0 lead on back-to-back-to-back hits to start the second inning. Mitch Davis led off with a double down the left field line, and Justin Gil followed with an infield single. Christian Hall then drove in both on a double to right center. Jean successfully retired the next two batters before Charles Emery laced another single through the right side. Tyler Adams (Woodstock, Ga.) came up with the ball quickly and fired home in time to get Hall at the plate to end the threat.

The Fighting Scots added another run in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead and chase Jean from the game. Gil singled through the right side to score one run and put runners on first and third with one out. Gil eventually stole second, but Morabito got a strikeout and groundout to prevent either inherited runner from further advancing.

Lincoln Memorial's leadoff batter reached in four straight innings from the third through fifth, which produced a pair of runs. Ewers was hit to lead off the bottom of the fourth and eventually scored on a sac fly from Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Two innings later, Wages reached on an error and advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt. AJ Weed (Hendersonville, Tenn.) singled up the middle to cut the deficit to 3-2 and knock Valentine out of the game.

Ohio Valley loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with one out, but Morabito got the final two batters to strike out and weakly ground out to end the threat.

The Railsplitters used the shift in momentum to take the lead, 4-3 in the bottom half of the inning. Wages' go-ahead double scored Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) and Russell Clark (Wexford, Pa.), who had both previously singled.

Ewers' bases-loaded triple in the eighth inning increased that lead to 7-3.

Game Two: Ohio Valley 3, Lincoln Memorial 2

The Railsplitters jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first off Ohio Valley starting pitcher Travis Perkola. Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) was hit to lead off the game, and Augustine followed with a walk. They both advanced on a double steal, and Ewers laced a single to left so score them.

Those would be the only two runs Perkola would allow through 6.1 innings. Lincoln Memorial had its chances against the lefty, who allowed seven hits and five walks, but couldn't come up with another clutch hit. After Ewers' single, the Railsplitters went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Matt Mullenbach (Urbandale, Iowa) kept Ohio Valley off the board for three innings before the Fighting Scots solved him in the fourth. Two singles and a wild pitch set up a two-run single for Davis. After walking the next batter, Mullenbach was relieved by Cody Hinson (Taylor Ridge, Ill.).

Lincoln Memorial's best chance at scoring came in the bottom of the fourth following a Wages leadoff double. Kalman flied out to advance him to third with one out. Weed then walked, but Perkola struck out the next two batters to escape the jam unscathed.

The teams remained scoreless until Ohio Valley pushed across the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth. The Fighting Scots knocked three consecutive singles against Hinson, which were the only hits he allowed in 3.1 innings of relief. Gil laced the final one through the left side of the infield to drive in Spencer Miller.

Perkola retired the leadoff batter in the bottom of the seventh but walked the next two to end his night. Charles Emery came in from shortstop and got Ewers and Augustine to fly out to nail down his first save.
