No. 11 Railsplitters battle Anderson in regular-season home finale Wednesday

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The 11th-ranked Railsplitters (22-4, 17-3 SAC) begin the final week of the regular season and look to remain atop the South Atlantic Conference standings on Wednesday when they host the Anderson Trojans (13-13, 11-9 SAC) at 8 p.m. inside of Tex Turner Arena. Lincoln Memorial will be looking to win its 13th straight game, while Anderson arrives in Harrogate as winners in six of its last eight games.

The Railsplitters are coming off of one of the most memorable regular-season wins of the past decade, as Lincoln Memorial overcame a 10-point deficit with seven minutes to play to upset the 10th-ranked Queens Royals 81-79 at Tex Turner on Saturday afternoon. The Railsplitters rode their defense down the stretch in that comeback, holding the Royals without a field goal for nearly eight minutes to set the stage for Trevon Shaw's (St. Helena Island, S.C.) game-winner with 0.6 seconds left.

That victory was undoubtedly one of the most significant regular-season wins in recent memory. The Railsplitters jumped into a tie for first place in the SAC standings, and positioned themselves to earn a share of their fifth consecutive regular-season title and serve as the No. 1 seed for the SAC Championship. Additionally, it likely helped Lincoln Memorial overtake Queens for the top spot in the regional rankings, which will be released on Wednesday. The Railsplitters, who have hosted the last two NCAA Division II Southeast Regionals, were second behind the Royals in last week's rankings.

Lincoln Memorial has faced a ton of adversity this season in the form of injuries. Star point forward Dorian Pinson (Greenville, S.C.) is expected to miss the remainder of the season, while starting power forward Emanuel Terry (Enterprise, Ala.) has missed 10 games with a lingering lower-body injury. Several top reserves have also missed significant time.

Instead of fragmenting the team, the circumstances of this season have galvanized the group as a whole. In the wake of those injuries, a few unheralded players have stepped up when their number has been called, and that was the case once again against Queens. Redshirt-senior Hunter Spaw (Bean Station, Tenn.) scored 10 points and tallied a game-high four steals to aide the Railsplitters' defensive effort, while Cornelius Taylor (Claxton, Ga.) scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to help fuel the comeback.

The Railsplitters hope to avoid a letdown against an Anderson team that is playing for seeding in the upcoming SAC Championship. The Trojans have won three consecutive games and six of their last eight overall to put themselves in a three-way logjam for fifth place in the league with an 11-9 mark.

The Trojans are coming off of an 88-78 win at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday. In that contest, Anderson shot an absurd 66 percent from the field and went 7-for-14 from three-point range, while Lenoir-Rhyne finished a dreadful 9-for-29 from the arc.

Anderson is led by sophomore guard Randall Shaw, who leads the SAC in scoring with 21.6 points per game on 49.3 percent shooting and a 41.7 percent mark from three. In addition to that, Shaw is contributing 4.1 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He has reached the 20-point mark in 15 of his 21 appearances, including a 45-point outburst at Brevard on January 4. Shaw has touched 20 points in three straight games.

Aside from Shaw, five other Anderson players are chipping in at least seven points per game. Redshirt-freshman Carlos Dotson is averaging a near double-double with 10.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while Maurice Howard is pitching in 9.5 points and 3.4 assists per game. Shawn Benard (9.3 points per game), Jeremy Bouton (8.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Andrew Boynton (7.2 ppg) are also key players for the Trojans.

Anderson is an efficient offensive unit that is shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 38.2 percent from three-point range, but the Trojans play at one of the slowest paces in the league, ranking 10th in the SAC in field goal attempts per game with 58.2. Anderson is ranked eighth in the SAC in scoring with 78.8 points per game.

The Trojans are solid on the defensive end, though, ranking fourth in the SAC in points per game allowed with 77.8 and fifth in opponent field-goal percentage with a 44.1 percent clip. Opponents are shooting just 34.6 percent from three against Anderson.

Lincoln Memorial is 9-7 all-time against Anderson and has won seven straight games in the series since suffering an 84-79 overtime loss at Tex Turner Arena on November 26, 2013.

The Railsplitters cruised to a 94-77 win over the Trojans in the first meeting this season back on January 11. Lincoln Memorial shot nearly 65 percent in the first half to race out to a 22-point lead at the break. The Trojans outscored the Railsplitters 47-42 in the second half, but that wasn't enough to overcome that huge deficit.

Chris Perry (Bartow, Fla.) led all players with 25 points on 12-of-16 shooting to go along with 12 rebounds, while Luquon Choice (Laurens, S.C.) had 21 points with seven three-pointers. Paul Woodson (Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a career-high 18 points in 31 minutes off the bench. Howard and Warren Vinson led Anderson with 16 points apiece, while Choice limited Shaw to just 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

Tip-off between Lincoln Memorial and Anderson is set for 8 p.m. on Wednesday night in Tex Turner Arena. Live stats, video and audio links are available at www.LMURailsplitters.com.

Five things to watch against Anderson:
1. Anderson is an incredibly young team. Six of the Trojans' top-seven scorers are underclassmen with junior Maurice Howard serving as the lone upperclassman playing more than 14 minutes per game.

2. The Railsplitters have won the last four games in the series by double figures. In last season's home game, Lincoln Memorial won 85-72. Choice scored 26 points to lead LMU, while Shaw pitched in a game-high 27 points to power the Trojans offensively.

3. The Trojans are ranked ninth in the SAC in rebounds per game with 36.8 and sixth in rebounding margin with a plus-0.3 edge for the season. The Railsplitters lead the SAC in both of those categories with 43.4 and a plus-10 margin. Lincoln Memorial outrebounded Anderson 37-28 in this season's first meeting.

4. Choice needs six three-pointers to reach 400 for his career. Additionally, the Laurens, S.C. native is just 38 points away from 1,900.

5. The Trojans are ranked 10th in the SAC in free-throw percentage with a 67.2 percent mark but are averaging nearly 25 free throw attempts per game.
