Railsplitters rip Bluefield in straight sets

LMU completes its six-game home stand with a 4-2 record

HARROGATE, Tenn. -- The Lincoln Memorial University men's volleyball team hit .313 as a unit and held the visiting Bluefield Rams (0-12) to a -.031 clip in a 3-0 win at Mary Mars Gymnasium on Tuesday night. The Railsplitters (7-10) completed their six-match home stand with a 4-2 record and swept the season series from the Rams by scores of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-14.

Nearly everybody got in on the act for the Railsplitters offensively. Ryan Iskandar (Tempe, Ariz.) posted five kills, 15 assists, a pair of aces and two digs, while Evan Cory (Metairie, La.) also had five kills, eight assists, four aces and three digs. Marcus Molina (Newport Beach, Calif.) also tallied five kills. Pedro Carvalho (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Nico Triana (Miami, Fla.) had four kills apiece, while Jorge Collazo (San Juan, Puerto Rico) led the way with seven digs.

Carleek Owens accounted for 11 of Bluefield's 17 kills and led the team in digs with a match-high 10, but he also had 12 of the team's 19 attack errors. Aireon Leary was the only other Bluefield player with more than two kills, finishing with three to go along with three assists and three digs. Chaz Franqui led the way with 13 assists and four digs for the Rams.

The Railsplitters never trailed in the opening set, but the Rams kept within striking distance throughout. In fact, back-to-back kills from Owens tied the frame at 12-12 at the midway point before the Railsplitters ripped off 10 straight points to take a commanding 22-12 lead on a kill from Iskandar and a Bluefield attack error. The Rams won seven of the next nine rallies, but another attack miscue ended the 25-19 LMU win.

The second set was much less competitive, as the Railsplitters raced out to a 16-5 lead and never looked back. A 6-0 run later in the set made it 23-7 before a kill from Triana clinched the 25-9 bashing. The Railsplitters hit .571 in the set with eight kills and no errors on just 14 attempts.

The third and final set was more of the same, with Lincoln Memorial catapulting out to a 14-6 lead on an Iskandar service ace. Later in the set, a 5-0 run increased LMU's lead to 20-8. The Rams trimmed some off the lead at the tail end of the frame, but a service error completed LMU's straight-set victory.

The Railsplitters will play their first road match in nearly a month on March 3 when they travel to Franklin Springs, Ga. to play the Emmanuel Lions at 7 p.m.
