ORANGEBURG, S.C. -- Lincoln Memorial bounced back from a season-opening sweep at No. 6 USC Aiken with a 19-5 thrashing of the Claflin Panthers (0-4) Monday at Historic Mirmow Field. The Railsplitters (1-3) led 19-2 after the first four innings.
Senior
Timmy Wages (Molin, Ill.) started on the mound and coasted to the win, pitching five innings with three runs allowed—two earned—and seven strikeouts. He also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a career-best eight RBI and his first collegiate home run.
Wages' two-run shot capped a five-run first inning off Claflin starting pitcher Christian Buford.
Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) drove in the first two runs with a single, and
Eric Kalman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) followed with another RBI single. Ewers finished the afternoon 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Kalman went 3-for-3 with two RBI and four runs scored.
Logan Augustine (Urbandale, Iowa) kicked off the scoring in the second inning with a sac fly. A few batters later, Wages came up again with the bases loaded. He hit a fly ball to center that the center fielder dropped for one of four Panther errors, which cleared the bases and put the Railsplitters ahead 9-0.
The Panthers got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the second on a Chase Henderson RBI single and sac fly by Jeffrey Evans.
Lincoln Memorial scored seven more runs in the third to blow the game wide open at 16-2.
Nate Stinson (Jonesboro, Ga.) doubled home the first run of the inning and scored himself on an Augustine single. Kalman doubled home another run, and a
Turner Whitfield (Knoxville, Tenn.) single plated two more. Another dropped fly ball by the center fielder allowed the final two runs to score. The RBI for Stinson and Whitfield were the first of the freshmen's careers.
Wages again stepped up to the plate in the fourth inning and again cleared the bases—this time with a double to center, which put Lincoln Memorial ahead 19-2.
Henderson drove in another run for the Panthers in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI groundout.
Claflin added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-run home run by Johnny Stevenson.
The Railsplitters hit the road again Friday and Saturday for games in Melbourne, Fla. against the Florida Tech Panthers. First pitch Friday is slated for 6 p.m.
